Boatpoker is right about the Tonnage Survey, as soon as the boat is over 12m in Canada and you want Federal Registration then it's mandatory. I had to go threw this with our previous French built cat.

Of course there is a wide range of conditions where these are beneficial, incl. 30+ kts of wind conditions. But even then, setting 10kg more in chain scope is better than adding a 10kg kellet....

Totally agree with Mr Banks, when used properly they are a great asset. We used a Kiwi anchor rider I think it is called for 10 plus years in The Bahamas on our cat. It was easy to use. It can't hurt...

As Nanamuk eluded to, it's the metal in these motors that we have to worry about! The engineering is fantastic but the need [or greed] to make motors lighter and cheaper has lead to inferior metals....
