Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

Yes Salty,- nice list. Though I must confess, I'm usually sitting in a place across the table from this lady with little to distinguish one sandy beach, fruity rum drink or palm in the wind from another.

I remember this hill top bar in St. Lucia.....,

..... but no name, -'probably couldn't find the place again. It seems as though I'm very concerned with my location on the water, but not so much ashore. .... maybe I need a "Salty Monkey" pub location guide!

Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

"The Wreck Deck" Bocas del Toro Panama:

The gringa tourists roll in and out like the tide... Seco con leche, $0.75 a round. Bring your own drool bucket.

"Marge's Lakeside Inn" (aka Marge's, The Tavern) Seabreeze, NY:

An odd little bar... Owned by the same family since the '20s its just another cottage in a row of old Lake Ontario beach cottages. A speak-easy during prohibition, still has bullet holes in the basement wall from the fire fight with the "revenoors" after running in a boat load of whiskey from Canada.
Beware the Wisniowka (aka red-pop) It actually caused me to get married in this bar. Many wedding receptions have been held there, but only one wedding.

Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

Three most memorable...

#1 The macalvi, Chile, Awesome pisco sours and just a stagger back to bed. Always interesting company.

#2 Vernadski, Antarctica, not sure the vodka is safe, apparently it can make you go blind. Bring a bag of sugar and any ladies should supply a bra for the collection. it being a long dark winter...

#3 Goobers bar in Bluff, NZ. not sure what its really called, but walk along the waterfront till you see a bar full of older men. Walk in and order a beer. If goobers in he will swear at you. In our case, still stinking from 7 days across from Hobart, we wandered in. Goober first question was "where you ***ts from" we told him.. "hey everyone.. these *ssholes are from stralia" the old fellows looked up from their pints and we wondered if we could outrun them! they looked like hard men, dockers and fishermen. But we needn't have worried, turned out a great night. A lock in till about 3am, by about 1 am I asked goober for another beer. "ya know where the f**ken till is!" he slurred as he slumped glassy eyed over an impressive pile of empty glasses. A great night.

#gotta go with a number 4. The french base at Dumont D'urville. A truly memorable night, in a remarkable place. I remember Popping outside from the darkened smoke filled bar and hearing penguins and seeing my little 33 footer moored in the ice, in the midnight sun, then back to the bar, the game of pool and the french ladies. Surreal

Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

In no particular order. The Back Porch, Port Aransas Texas. Stingarees, Bolivar Peninsula, Texas. Sun Dance Bar and Grill, Waterford Marina, Kemah Texas. And last but not least, the Big Bamboo, Loblolly Bay, Anegada, BVI. Haven't been back in a while but the Back Porch used to have the best fish fajitas on Friday. I'd eat and drink until I couldn't no more, fall or roll into my dink, try to find my boat on the transient pier and quietly fall asleep.

Pete's Pub, Little Harbour, Abacos - sand floor, funky, great rum punch and cheeseburgers, laid back

On race days, sure. Otherwise very eclectic.

All good.

'good to know. We haven't been there in a few years and the place was never a "top three", but it does have a unique simplicity!

'as for Pete's Pub,- I have to list this among the top, as my current wife and I were married there!

Edit: Nancie suggested that I correct my "current wife" quip, as I have been currently married to the same woman for 44 years. We did have a fun "second" wedding ceremony in Pete's Pub using one of Pete's double dolphin rings to replace the wedding ring that Nancie lost in Marsh Harbor.

Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

Miss Emily is famous throughout the bahamas as the inventor of the "goombay smash", whose formula is still a closely guarded family secret. The Blue Bee Bar is almost a required stop for new arrivals in the abacos. And not inconvenient as its along the path to the customs house. But we prefer Macintosh's for lunch or dinner (and ice cream!) and Pineapples for drinks, snacks, and socializing..

Re: Poll: Favorite Bars and Pubs

Ok...Ok,- to honor Salty Monkey's list I needed to spend some time and come up with an honest three:
#1 From my hometown - Up the New Riverr in Fort Lauderdale on the port just past the FEC railway bridge and with docks,... "The Pirate Republic".

#2 In Boothbay, Maine with a convenient dinghy dock,- The Blue Moon Cafe.

#3 In Key Largo's Blackwater Sound & with a dinghy docks,- The Caribbean Club.

....................... beyond the poll ..........................
#4 Aythya's cockpit for any of my Cruiser's Forum friends that find my ketch anchored out between 4pm and sundown,- dinghys welcome!

Inside looked like filming an episode or Duck Dynasty (ZZ-TOP beards) & the baddest looking women I have ever seen. Order the IPA and have a Pizza.

We first visited Pete's Pub almost 40 years ago. It was little more that driftwood arranged as a 'room'. We had to share glasses - not enough to go around.
