Another Non Stick Question

I was reading a galley site on stovetop toast, and there was a comment along the lines that one should never use non-stick to make toast. I bought a recommended SS camp stove toaster but it's messy and I don't want to run a vacuum cleaner to suck up the crumbles.

I have two "healthy" non stick sauté pans at the moment and have been using non stick for decades if not eons. They do a wonderful job of heating everything and especially browning the very few slices of bread I ever eat. Bread's bad, doncha know.

Geez, I'm almost 72. Should I really be worried about the Toxic Poisonous Gasses coming off of non stick this late in the game? Non stick cleans up easily. That counts for a lot in my little sphere of influence.

If you're concerned about it, why not buy a little cast iron skillet to make your toast in? Maybe you can find one in a junk shop, 'cause they've become expensive these days.

The poisonous gases are a product of burning the pan with very high temperatures that normal cooking don't create … monitor the pan while cooking and don't forget to remove it from the burner when you're done. Enjoy your toast.

Blue, what do you call "healthy" non-stick? A traditional plastic surface, like teflon? Or a true "healthy" alternative like the "green" ceramics?

There's no doubt about the science, when you heat the plastics and plastic composites to something like 500F they emit toxins. When you heat the ceramics they don't. A nicely seasoned cast-iron pan.

How old is old enough to worry? Depends on your genes, your lifetime dose, and how much longer you plan to live. Bottom line is that NO exposure to carcinogens is good for you, and while moving off-planet may be unfeasible, why would you add to your risk of dying a long painful lingering death when it is just so easy not to expose yourself to some things?

Teflon, BPAs, lead, arsenic, second-hand smoke, flame-retardants in fabrics...there's a whole long list that you can just "SAY NO" to.

Squint at the nutrition labels. You might be surprised at the variation from "Wonder White" to various other combinations, including the ones with other grains besides wheat. Wide variations in a lot of "same" foods that way. And AFAIK, there's only one brand of cocktail sauce (Golds', from the horseradish company) that is made without any added fructose or corn sugar. But at least there IS one! Ketchup...a bit harder to get.

Someone does make low-carb bread--it's called Pepperidge Farms Carb Style.

In order to create a release of toxins from Teflon-coated pans you would have to use a temperature high enough to melt the Teflon--over 600 degrees F. Any toast would be scorched beyond belief at this temperature.

Thanks. I do have the ceramic pans. I'd forgotten about the ceramic aspect. Truth be told, I wouldn't call them non stick, as much as "sticks but cleans off easier than other materials." I like them but I get your point (s).

Mark, thanks for the good post on the sodium issue. I was reading a LCHF site earlier and the writer called beer "liquid bread." I sucked in my belly and made yet another resolution.

Ann, I'd get an iron skillet for toast but I'm on my 5th week on the same loaf of bread.

Beer, however, goes quickly around here.

I may be on a diet but its stupid if it ruins my life, so i still drink beer. Lots of it! However a full bottle of red wine has about half the carbs that one small bottle of beer has!

So on a friday night (tonight) i have had a bottle of red with dinner and now I am off to a nightclub for a few beers .


Are their any calories in girls?

That's the number the Nike Fuelband seemingly reports. I don't think the girl type makes a lot of difference ( well they need to be alive !)

Anything that kills a bird on the other side of the room dead as a doornail is not something I want to cook with. Non stick pans release a plethora of nasty things, things that you might not notice. Let me ask you this, if it's able to kill a bird with toxins do you really want to cook with it? Cast iron or ss here only!
