Ive just got home after a delivery from Tahiti to Hawaii. The winds have really been E or SE for almost all of our trip, even N of the equator. 2-3m seas, these guys are on the wind. It'll be slow going that way. and uncomfortable.

Just my two cents worth.
When Posting on the internet. Before I hitthe post key I always try to reread my post. Then I ask myself would I say this to the persons face and in the the company of everyone that has access to the post. Sometimes a new thread to continue the discussion would sometimes be kinder.

the craft that was seen a week ago and is being searched for now is only making 1.1 kts way. this is consistent with the winds and headings of a heavy cruiser. last week they did notice a deliberate appearing course change to avoid beam seas, therefore i think we are going to hear some positive news soon.l i am still awaiting ali's updates. when i read them i will post them.

Yes, beating into the trades can slow you down, plus, man, I think I'd heave to to rest, which of course would lose you ground that you worked hard for, but......

We did that all the time but on Silk (our first boat), just hove to and waited for the wind direction to change. That boat was a classic centerboard ketch and did not make good progress upwind (like I suspect the boats in the op's) so seemed much better to just take a break, get some rest, read some books, cook some good meals; rather than bash our brains out for little progress.

Hawk was a machine upwind, and we did not do this on her. She made good time pretty much no matter what the conditions, and sometimes we just held on and let her go for it. Made me sea sick, but that's just free weight loss

searching has been suspended. uscg estimates richards time of arrival in hiva oa approx june 26. we, here in mazatlan, figure mebbe mid july at his current rate of speed, 1.1 kts hourly.
ali, richards daughter will advise me of his successful arrival when it occurs. then i will have more information for you.

How long has the vessel been traveling at 1.1 kts? Seems like after a while some wind would fill back in eh?

If they are only going 1.1 knota would expect they lost the stick and are proceeding under jury rig. That would also go a long ways to their losing voice communications if the antenna was part of the rigging.

That is a reasonable hypothesis, but the vessel was in the ITCZ. As long as Richard has water (and he is likely to be able to catch some there), he should make it in, and perhaps a lot thinner. However, if he is becalmed, he may be able to satisfactorily fish, and that is good, too.

Evans is right, heaving to can be an opportunity; sometimes unnecessary.

Let's just keep good hopes going for Richard.

so tomorrow was his projected eta. me n a neighbor figgered at 1.1 kts he will arrive in hiva oa mid july from his last recorded point.
the uscg forst pass showed Richard had changed course from beam seas to bashing into seas, with a more direct course towards hiva oa.
mid july.
god only knows why he slowed to the crawl he is travelling other than big seas with short periods and forming cyclonic event not that very far away, he should be having absolutely no fun at all.
so I have a peso on mid july. come on Richard.

the boat akesha left ensenada to hiva oa and arrived 51 days after departure.
less distance than Richard must cover on his passage.
mid july.
sea nymph was overdue on arrival in hiva oa-- there is not yet reason to believe that Richard is not on board and bashing into rough stuff with impending doom forming on his stbd beam. is giving me the chills thinking about it..
ps he has a watermaker but if electricals have failed that wont be much use.
I did see him loading garafones of water before leaving mazatlan for Puerto Vallarta.
