At the Yacht Club, we used to use what we called the "Muskoka Hitch" or the "Cottage Hitch", which was very similar to the Douglas Hitch in Deblen's Post #11.

That said, it might be more aptly called a "spaghetti hitch", as when you do it, it creates a long chain... quick release and very decorative, but not to be used as a long-term fastening.

Not in the least! Just take a stroll thru any marina and look at the garbage people wrap around cleats. Ive actually seen small boats sunk and dock pilings pulled from the bottom because the hitch could not be released as water levels rose (and no one had a knife aparrently)

I have a less polite name for them too "Mongolian Cluster F*** Hitch"! [emoji16]

Wasn’t it Dennis Connor, multiple Americas Cup winning skipper, who said:

“ If you can’t tie good knots, tie plenty of them. “

Re: Knot Funny

He might (k)not like the clove hitch but here in UK we often have to raft up in marinas (although maybe not so much now with Covid restrictions in place,) so the ability to quickly change the height of your fenders, especially when single handing, is vital. That being said, I do a modified clove hitch with a loop as the final tuck rather than putting the bitter end right through, then when I am tied up alongside, I tuck the bitter end through the loop and snug it up. It is not going to work loose but is still easy to undo when I leave. The RYA teaches the dock cleat knot as an "OXO" (a well known brand of stock cube)knot, that is, once right round the cleat, two crossovers and then once right round again, they do not advocate a locking hitch at the end which can take time to undo if you need to let it go in a hurry. It can also be done very quickly with a single hand.

#1. Bowline
#2. Round Turn & 2 Half-Hitches
#3. Anchor/buntline hitch
#4. Rolling hitch
#5. Figure-8
#6. Sheet bend
#7. Reef knot
#8. Cleat hitch (although this is barely worthy of mention)
What do you use the buntline for that it comes above the cleat hitch?

Re: Knot Funny

A rope walks into a bar, sits down, orders a drink. The bartender says, "Hey buddy, we don't serve your kind here."

Dejected, the rope leaves. Outside he ties himself into a knot, frays his ends, and walks back into the bar. The bartender stops him and says, "Hey! Aren't you that rope I just sent out of here?"

To which the rope replies, "No. I'm a frayed knot."

I use this for most shackle attachments instead of eye splicing.

To be clear, I didn't really consider a cleat hitch as a knot -- not one worthy of thinking about. Honestly... it's just so obvious when it's done right, or when it's done wrong. I realize it's often done wrong, but honestly... I don't get it.

Showoff!

Of course, I've never heard of 4 of them... You mean there are knots other than sailing knots...?

The horror!

As my aunt would say, "that's two-thirds of a pun... P-U". (A Groaner, in other words.)

(I think if you'll look on the first page of responses, Montanan posted a comic of another version of this joke.)

Dennis Conner is too arrogant to have said any such thing. (Sorry, shall I tell you what I really think?) People who sail on his boats tie their knots right or they don't sail on his boats.

Love that saying, though!
I'm gonna use it!

Re: Knot Funny

ha, I got you all beat...

I took up fishing as a new hobby.....

in the past...I used the tried and true "granny Knot" to attach a hook to a line.....it worked....sortoff....

since then, I've learned, ( because I had to practice it over and over again), about a dozen ways to correctly tie a hook to a fishing line.....many variations on this I learned...Youtube has dozens of "how to" video's.....who knew, there was a "right" way and a "wrong" way to tie a hook to a line..

Re: Knot Funny

One great knot no one has mentioned is the EDK (Euro Death Knot).
It's KISS simple and gets the job done. We use it in rock climbing for rappelling all the time (the name is a misnomer).
Safe simple, easy to untie. Very useful.
