Dunno which rock star said that, but long ago we were told "if ya can't tie a knot, tie a lot" by someone not famous... or even memorable (obviously).

When I was wiring Ethernet cables in remote offices I found that strapping it in a way that made it impossible to move any of the wires without cutting a lot of ties discouraged local "experts" from moving things around.

Another side benefit which I hadn't considered - thanks for making it!

Also makes it easy to know where to reattach any removed wire.

With reference to the illustration in Montanan's post #7, whipping on the ends of lines
Cleat hitch
Clove hitch
Bowline
Buntline hitch
Figure 8 stopper

I use buntline hitches to tie halyards to the peaks of sails, because they're the shortest of knots. That's why they're called buntline hitch.

Well, two half hitches are the same size - because that's all a buntline hitch is. It just has the second hitch on the inside. So humor my pedantry and we'll call it "one of the shortest".

Re: Knot Funny

I'm a fan of barrel knot for a stopper. Bigger and looks good.

You're coming late to the party, Seymore.

Please see Post #25 for an alternative stopper that actually works.

Also, did you read the article? Captain John suggests a clove hitch shouldn't really be in a "Top 5" list.

Based on where it appears on your list, you must use it a lot!

Yes, I think laughter has been sorely lacking around here for a while.

Thanks for a fun thread .

I think you mean a Celtic knot . It's got a million uses on a boat .
