You are confused! I'm talking about the moral responsibility of protecting the VICTIM, not the insured person. If you have no assets and yet cause great damage to someone else, insurance means that their loss is mitigated.
You are talking about protecting the assets of someone who has them.
Big difference!
Jim
Bingo, Jim. Morally, our first responsibility is the damage we may do to OTHERS.

Fair enough. I understood your point, but I was simply saying liability protection is just as important (maybe more so) for people with assets.

I disagree.. I think you having liability insurance is more important for those you hit with no assets..

Their failure is our failure. We are not a community of one. They will most definitely fail if we do not allow them room to succeed. Most kids today are not just brats, but horrible brats. That is our collective failure. Ignorance does not equate to stupidity, just a lack of knowledge. They are 26 and 24, I believe they are right where they should be. I disagree, reasonable intelligence and planning does not guarantee anything. I appears these young people have stepped on your toes and now we just need to flesh out the how and why.
Not sure if your comments are tongue in cheek but criticism of the young is as old as the written word. I well remember some of the bullets I dodged along the to being an old codger. All by luck.
I meet a lot of inspiring young people. Not all driven by avarice.
A broad education is something you must take. It can’t just be something given or paid for.

I believe it may have Hereford inlet ? I think it is perhaps charted but not for depth.
I went into Manasquan at night with huge rollers and the bridge tender only opened one span, half the bridge, jeez Louise....
Hereford inlet is just north of Cape May. Yikes. None of these unjettied ocean inlets is navigable by a keelboat without the best of weather and best of local knowledge. And even then.
My engine died last summer as I was entering Atlantic City inlet in a pretty wild sea state. Luckily was windy so was able to unfurl headsail and sail in and anchor, then fix engine. Can’t imagine taking that risk in a tenuous inlet.
Ok so they clearly have enough money to remove boat via go fund me. Have they started that process? Here’s the true test of whether they try to pocket the money and run? Or do the right thing and clean up their mess.
The 'Keel' question will be answered after the 'Have they Salvaged it.. and paid for it.' question..

Here's a video.. you can see the boat at various states of the tide.. sometimes half the hull, sometimes just the top as it lays there.
Do not think he knew quite where he was or what the depth was, just assumed it from chart info.. to far out to have hit any of the charted obstructions further in.. a rookie mistake that, from what a local says, has been done by experienced locals.
There but for the grace of the tree fairy..
The video linked above, the reporter says at the end that the couple is trying to figure out how to pay for removal of the boat, which is "expected to cost $6,700"

Their Gofundme account has $16,000 plus now.
It appears they came out ahead, or may profit.
Curious to see which of the 'Free Boats' they choose.. if any.
