New Canadian Sailors

Hello! We are so very new to the sailing world - our only experience is on a lake in the prairies of Canada! This past year has been one of growth and self discovery and we have both done an incredible amount of learning through everyone’s experiences here on the forums. We have been refitting our boat for a year and are excited to share more of our projects and progress, as I know a lot of the existing content has really helped us along the way and continues to help others every day! The community here is amazing and we are excited to be more involved as we put our boat back in the water this summer. We will learn to sail it and get comfortable before heading off on our adventure. We want to connect with anyone else in the community who likes to talk boats, travel, whatever - so reach out and say Hi! We’re still always learning, but always happy to help and share when we can. Thanks to everyone who has shared their projects and experience - google always leads me here to find the answer I’m after. Always.

Hello from a former Albertan -- I learned on North Cooking Lake (which ceased being a lake several years ago)... I was the very small quiet Amazon pirate (because of the Swallows and Amazons books) of the Alberta wetlands... Now near Kingston with a Grampian 26 (as of yesterday), hoping to be in the water next month... I hope everything goes well for you �� maybe we'll cross paths someday

Welcome from a Canadian stuck in Australia since January 2020 due to the pandemic. You have taken up a wonderful activity which can become a lifestyle, provide adventure in many ways and brings you into a wonderful community of fellow sailors and yachties.

Since I’ve been in Australia, I’ve had tremendous welcome and support from the sailing community and have been cruising in many beautiful locations. Truly a life dream fulfilled with more to come. Welcome again. I forgot: since you'll be splashing the the Pacific, you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY need to buy a copy of Waggoners Guide and start studying it, and begin to assemble all the other tools you'll need ocne in the water here. There was a post just today about a guy who wanted to sail from Vancouver to Nanaimo and seemed clueless about tides & currents. Many of us tried to help him. I contributed my tides & currents cheat sheet, with links to the shortcuts from Barsboom to the Current Atlas, as well as the Canadian t&c tables.

Welcome projectsailboat. The wet coast is a great place to cruise (and live!). We have a resident in our home marina (Campbell River) who built his beautiful wooden boat in his backyard in Winnipeg.
