New Boater

Hello all! I’m Chris, currently living in Augusta, GA. My current job position pays incredibly well but is “temporary”, and I am seriously considering living aboard a boat after it is finished. After years in the Navy, and I am a workaholic, the small space on a boat doesn’t bother me. I am going through all I can to figure out what I don’t know to figure out what I need to learn. I would love all the advice I could get as well as a great community so I can get hands on experience learning what I need to learn!

Alright, My first question is aside from signing on to these forums how do I get involved with the community. I currently don’t even have a boat, and would like to go sailing with someone to learn the ropes.

Your local sailing/racing club is a great place to find people who want help crewing.

Welcome to CF!

When I first started I didn't know anyone either. I mean literally, I didn't know anyone. I had just transferred from Puerto Rico to Long Island NY with my job. First thing I did was read everything I could get my hands on, Chapman's, Annapolis Book of Seamanship, all the cruising mags, everything. I figured at least this way, I could have a conversation with a sailor, if I ever met one, without referring to "the pointy end" of the boat.

I found out when race night was (why is it always Wednesday evenings everywhere I go?) and volunteered to be rail meat. And that was the beginning. I found out quickly that racing was not my thing, but I had made the contacts. The rest is history, well my history anyway.

Get the basics in your head and then go find sailors. It always works, every single time. We love to show off our boats, our skills, our knowledge, we just love a willing listener.
