Greetings! From Calgary

Hello. I have just recently joined this site after years of lurking around and enjoying the posts and information the members have to offer. I have thus far received very good direction in forming a number of choices from all sides of the spectrum. I, unfortunately, have no sailboat to currently speak of...and am land locked in Calgary, Alberta; however, I am attempting to change both of those facts as soon as possible. I have taken my time in deciding if sailing is actually for me and despite my best efforts to deter myself, it seems to be. So, in the coming months I will be taking a number of courses, gathering information, learning more and trying to figure out if I can accomplish this mad goal I have; I would like to sail the South Pacific (eventually). Anyway, I thought I would say a friendly hello to all the people I have read over the years and hope to continue to read in the future!

My family (Mom n Sis) moved there a few years back... have yet to make the trip yet myself... some bludi great snowdrifts up that way I hear... BBBbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I am glad to see so many people familiar with or from Calgary! I will be starting my sailing courses on Glenmore on April 22 and have heard only good things about it, so I must say I am totally pumped! Being kinda land locked, I must admit - I've never even set foot on a sailboat! Am looking forward to it! 🚣

While you are waiting to start your sailing journey, go to Amazon's website, and purchase a beginner's sailing manual published by ASA; cheaper on Amazon, than buying it from ASA's website. Take your time to study it. When the time comes that you are on an actual boat, you will feel at home. There is plenty of reading and practicing of maneuvers to do. Seamanship skills are acquired over years of hands-on experience. Welcome aboard! (I've never been to Calgary, but been to Canada a few times; Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver Island.) Mauritz

Where are you and your family originally from? You are very right about the snow and the cold, though I must say we have had a rather mild winter all things considered. Heck for us right now it's practically spring weather!

I have several books at present but I will ensure that I get my hands on your recommendation! Well before I decided to actually jump into this with two feet I had done a fair bit of research but hadn't thought of grabbing an ASA manual! Hmmm...*opens Amazon*...I must admit I have a soft spot for Vancouver Island myself, but then again, it's hard not to! Any plans on coming to Canada in the future?
