Here's the other plugin I wanted to release. It's called VDR or Voyage Data Recorder. Very simple use: it can save and replay NMEA stream to/from a file.
Good point:it does not crash 506 on start up (vista) .
No preference: OK ?
I seem to have 2 instances of 'play' icons on the toolbar
When I press 'record', it asks for the name and location of a file. I could not remember which extension to give.
Sorry, can't test further as I have no AIS stream, being at home....
Added: Disabling the pluging leaves a 'record' icon on the toolbar. Opening and closing adds the play and record icons (not two play icons as on my first attempt)
Using the tool described in the website of the French help to OpenCPN with NavMonPc to make a simulation of the AIS, I could easily make a file with the VDR and play it automatically.
Bravo SethDart.
There is no need for extension to file name, but actually, this is surprising. Why not automatically choose the ". txt"?
Just a request, in the window that shows the speed of execution and progress, why not put some as X1, X10 .... X100 NavMonPc like.
Gilletarom.
In page openCPN. org where we can download the plug-in, it should update the version date which is not there.
Yesterday, trying the VDR , I had a crash during the first use. I did not talk because they could not reproduce it. I first wanted to be positive.
Today following a crash with the introduction of (new) dll Logbook, while I de-installed. Then reinstalled everything.
I wanted to play by the VDR file that I recorded yesterday and it did not work.
The window with the slider speed and progress bar opened without ever reading did occur. and moreover, it was impossible to close this window.
Finally I wanted to close OpenCPN. The OpenCPN window was closed but window VDR was not closed. And then crash.
See bug report and attached logfile and ini file
Sorry to report these problems, but tonight I had more unexplained crashes of all kinds that for several successive weeks.
And it's hard to separate things to highlight the cause.
I still made the big household. And I reinstalled everything.
I validated only VDR plugin.
I tried to play my file -----> same problem, nothing happens except that the window with the slider and progress bar appears.
I started again on the icon of Replay. The window for selecting a file to play was again open. I chose to play another file. And this time, the replay took place normally.
I then clicked on the icon of replay. The replay has stopped. but the replay window has not closed. She returned to the position open but nothing happens.
So there are two instance of action that are initiated in my experience. The second instance has functioned normally but the first does not work correctly.
Then I shutdown OpenCPN and then crash.
The attachment shows you my screen at the end of the experiment.
I also add the. ini and. log (should be removed. doc)
This morning, I have not changed my configuration. I don 't do anything reinstalled. There is no problem with the VDR! I can not reproduce the problem last night!
The only thing that has changed:
- I stopped the machine at night to restart this morning.
- And I corrected the French language file
Afterwards, I did a lot of test on behalf of a problem that disappeared too, on display in toolbox / language.
- Multiple icons & remaining icon
This must be related to others plugins breaking toolbar API code. Can you try it with all other plugins disabled and report. Please also try to locate wich plugin is the curlpit and ask the maintainer accordingly.
- No .txt extension
Well, it's not a txt file even if it contains text, it should not be edited by hand. There are checksums allaround. I would rather use .nmea
Anyway, you can name it the way you want. It'll keep the name upon reload.
- Two instances
Could not reproduce yet but it may be related to reaching the end of the file and then playing another file. This lead to two dialogs open with one lost thus not destroyed and crashing opencpn.
v0.2 coming soon to address this.
A gag ... I launched NavMonPc (for the simulation AIS) and simultaneously the replay of a file. I found the displays strange until I understood what was happening. In any case, this has not been a problem. But obviously does not for that fact.
You can:
- Launch a replay and then click on "Save" without problem.
- change the file "played" by interrupting the reading of a first file to launch a second one in stride.
The result should give some sort of concatenation of the two files played sequentially.
It works, it seems. There was no HARC.
I also tried something absurd, which should be "banned". I started recording and then I launched the "replay " of the same file. There was no crash.
Another test "absurd", I made a record then I launched the replay of the same file and then I stopped recording. No crash. but it should be banned.
- Multiple icons & remaining icon

With the new 0.2 version, starting with all plugins disabled, enable VDR, 2 icons on the toolbar as expected, start recording, then closing VDR, the play icon remains on the toolbar...
(Vista, 506)

With XP, SP3.
If I disable VDR, the play icon remains also on the toolbar...
And it is always possible to run the replay.
And if I enable VDR, there is two icons replay and one recorder icon.
