NOAA report: 10,000 Containers List Annually

Here on the Pacific coast stuff washes up all the time.. (Before the Japan Tsunami). For a while it was thousands of Running shoes. Obviously they came from containers. What is weird is human feet continue to be found on beaches.....

anyone know if the original transport vessel / company is libel for these containers?

if they lose one and i strike it while cruising resulting in damage / loss are those losses recoverable from the aforementioned shipping company / content owner?

i have to think that, assuming i dont die, the evidence of the container's presence and identification is verifiable by whomever comes to scoop me out of the water and therefore corroborated evidence in a claim / law suit.

Stuff washes ashore on beaches all the time. But have you ever seen a container wash up? Or heard of one wash up? Unless its righ close to the accident, its so unlikely that I havent heard or seen any on any of the beaches Ive lived.

Nor seen any at sea.

I just read this report recently, How Many Shipping Containers Are Really Lost At Sea? - gCaptain Maritime & Offshore News

Containers Lost – 2008 to 2013
For the combined six year period from 2008 to 2013, the WSC estimates that there were 546 containers lost on average each year, not counting for catastrophic events. Counting for catastrophic events, an average of 1,679 containers were lost each year over the six years.

The difference between 546 and 1,679 was because of two large container ships that were lost about 5,200 containers in total. One ship was in the Indian Ocean and the other down in New Zealand.

Given that some where around 120 MILLION containers are moved around in 2013, 546 or 1,679 being lost is a very small percentage.

The empty weight of a small 20' container is just under 5,000 lbs, take a lot of tennis shoes to float that. I've packed several and none I've seen were even close to air tight, they are essentially identical to over the road tractor trailers as far as the door is concerned, so they would fill with water pretty fast

Electronic goods packed in styrofoam is an example of a container that will float for a long time. Floaters are rare, but of course they exist. What more is there to say on the matter?

25 plus years ago we were sailing back from Hawaii and my Son was doing the steering as both autopilots had gone south. I was in the bunk but I had a small compass mounted beside my bunk and I noticed we were off course so I came up to check it out and my Son had changed course to look at a bird that was standing on something. I grabbed the wheel and turned away from it and we passed by the corner of a container completely submerged except for the corner the bird was perched on. Only time I had ever seen one but its always on my mind when doing a crossing.

I know of 2 sinkings where containers were thought to be the cause. 1 power, 1 sail.

I've seen one. Seen heaps of logs and other stuff, but one container in over 40,000 NM....

One would think that the actuarial department of the commercial shipping insurers would have an excellent estimate of the number and type of lost containers. Are there no actuaries that are also sailors? Erk, if that were actually to be the case, it would be quite a scary statistic!
