Wow. As someone very familiar with NYC waters, I can confirm this is an extremely dangerous thing to try.

Talk about zero visibility due to being so close to the water! Not to mention lack of ability to move quickly out of the way of other traffic.

He's had 75,000 views on Youtube in only a couple of days,
isn't this what's important?

If YouTube views are one's goal, then definitely.

Here in NYC, they have City bikes, a bike sharing/coop.
I'm guessing the city fathers are right now meeting to
scale up a kayak commuting coop!

There is something captivating ( for many at least) about watching the clueless do something stoopid. This genere appears to me to be a big % of whats posted on YouTube.

Now, if he had gotten his hot girl friend in a tiny bikini to do the paddling and thrown in a dramatic capsize...then he would have many times the views!

Re: New Yorker Tries To Commute To Work By Kayak, Quickly Regrets The Decision

First off, this guy needs to learn how to properly kayak, this was just painful to watch on so many levels. He seemed to be making the worst choices for technique and where to paddle in the current, almost like he was heading for rips and not paddling to maintain direction and boat speed.

If I can open water paddle the 16 miles to North Manitou Island (in a small group) with some training in 2-4" waves in 10-15 knots winds, he could go the half mile if he really learned and made the effort. Jeesh….

Yeah, the East River has some wild currents. I remember heading south the first time with my dad in a Cape Dory 25. It's was going pretty well, and all of a sudden we're pointing at the west bank, then back north, then the east bank, and finally back south. I asked dad "why the 360?" He said after the spin started, he was just trying to keep moving to maintain steerage.

also came across this https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7788...7i13312!8i6656

I guess the google street cam took to a sailboat in the East River at some point

I kayaked to a party once. I didn't kayak back up river to get home. That would have been impossible.

Re: New Yorker Tries To Commute To Work By Kayak, Quickly Regrets The Decision

I kayak here in the sound all the time and I'm going out today. I learned all about tides and currents here pretty quick. Like the tide can change up 18' in just one cycle which leaves a dummy like me stranded 1000' from the truck and that's a long haul to carry a yak in mud. Now that I've been out over 100 times I got things figured out.
I think we should give the guy some slack. He will figure it out. I did and I'm a maroon.
