The best thing to do with a collie is simply keep him or her brushed to remove shedding hair and prevent matting. Once or twice a week is sufficient for most. You should not trim or shave a collie as the same elements that keep the dog warm in winter also help keep him cool in summer. Clipping should only be resorted to if serious matts form in the fur.

my dog is a perfect kitten maine coon mix--aged 4 yrs--he has sailed in florida in summer with me-he didnt seem to mind too awfully much--he just drank more and lay on the cooler fiberglass molded sole of the shower, with the best breeze in the boat. our critters will find comfort--give them credit--they often seem smarter than we are....we stay in the heat and nasty stuff--they find what feels good to them.

When it comes to comfort, most animals do quite well when left to their own devices provided you give them a place in the sun when its cold, a place in the shade when its hot, and adequate food and water.
