Yep. Unless the OP is a passionate sailor this is good advice.
There's a big enough learning curve with a power boat, let alone a power boat with mast and sails

I've owned my Swan 36 Frers for almost 7 years now and love it. I'm 62 and kept my property. You will want to go home at some point, at least I do. It's everything I've ever wanted in a boat and the quality keeps maintenance costs down. Good luck and hopefully you will enjoy your days at sea as much as I have. Hire a good surveyor!

I think it is excellent idea:

1. house prices are in bubble. There is a good chance it will deflate big time. So your boat will keep more value after all done and dusted. Yeah, i hear boat loses houses not, bs. It is not true. boat is house on water. Maintenance is the same. Only land is real value, although you still pay tax on it . Rest is just marketing.

2. You invest in your health. I do not understand why this is never mentioned. You watched these old movies of chinese/indian wise man living remotely in nice places 100+ years old and good looking. Because you do not get FLU or other viruses that kill you. Dont you think this is worth more than anything else? You get with boat that remote place and ability to live healthy and self sufficient and enjoying every day.

So you've seen all the usual responses to this often asked questions. Most are right. But I have another consideration, beyond "depreciating asset" and "it's a race horse" and all that.


A Swan is a lovely boat, and a fast boat, and a seaworthy boat. But it's a really lousy "anchor and look at the world" boat. It has small windows, a deep dark cabin, and an uncomfortable cockpit. Yes, it is large, a plus. And yes, it has exceptional craftsmanship, another plus. But there are far better boats for "water view." Catamarans and various power boats for starters. In monohulls, consider deck saloon boats. And consider as shoal a draft as you can work into the compromises.

I'm looking for a small single screw diesel inboard (or gas outboard) sleep aboard power boat, around 30 ft. I need to have a partner who lives in NE. where we will keep the boat. I live in Colorado and commute to NE in the summer. I need a partner who can watch over the boat and take care of her when I'm not there. I am good for half the purchase price and half the maintenance. This would be a good deal for someone because I will only use it for about 4 weeks in the summer. Where can I find this partner? Maybe I can find someone who will charter their boat to me for a week at a time? I have owned many boats and have thousands of sea miles to my credit tonysmith101@mac.com

The time to get one was 20 years ago.


Now they are few around and the clean healthy ones are $$$.


The imperfect ones are high maintenance toys - for a tinkerer, not for a sailor.



I NEARLY got a 44 at less than 40k she seemed a great buy ... until I made that business plan ... ;-)


I wish I could afford a proper S&S Swan. I do. They are hell to sail but beautiful and go upwind very well in offshore swell.


Just out of my reach. But very tempting.
