Re: Month 16 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat
Sorry if you've posted before, however how many of you are living off this budget?
Are you TRYING to be on a tight budget or just taking it as it comes without going overboard (pardon the pun)?
$1,000 is a fair amount for food shopping and your $600 for eating out it significant. My question will mainly be answered by what you answer above which will give me an idea of the type of lifestyle you are aiming for.

there's 2 of us and we target $3k/mo for the budget, note that the "food" line includes more than food

If you rode your dinghy to the Winn Dixie on Big Pine you could have saved at least $5.00 on that 1lb. Steak![emoji16][emoji38][emoji13][emoji857][emoji857][emoji857]

Big Pine is currently like the wildernesses, but where exactly is this magical Dixie place? How far a walk is it from a dinghy dock? Will there be a place to get gas for the outboard so I can make it back? Are there banjo players there?
See how receptive I am to improving my habits

My post was made with some lighthearted humor as Big Pine is probably a 20+ mile dinghy ride.[emoji16] If your at all interested in shopping at the magical Winn Dixie you and your wife are welcome to come along with us in our next trip......but no promises of banjo players!

Re: Month 16 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat
Hi Sailorboy! Thanks, again, for always providing these numbers. Helps me planning for our future. I did have a few thoughts.
I know everyone always comments on your "food and eating out budget (also sundries)"... because it is pretty high compared to what we spend on land... (you inspired me to start tracking). I just assume that you enjoy eating and drinking, and it's your entertainment. But, do you attribute any of that to the fact that you are living aboard and sailing? Such as, you are in an expensive port, or Island? Do you find that the restaurants, bars, and stores are far more expensive in Marina areas?
It is very encouraging to "my future budget" that your fuel, maintenance, and insurance are so low! those are the expenses I worry about the most. So, that gives me peace of mind.
I hope the "medical" was for insurance, and not illness. want you to be healthy.
One last thing... was the "transportation cost" due to taxi's etc? or did you rent a car in your current port?
OH, and you got off pretty easy for gifts at Christmas!!!! I totally broke my budget this year. But nothing I like better than buying gifts for people...
OH, and I agree.. thank you Mr. Trump for increasing my investments 30%! That's at least 3 years of a sailing kitty according to your budget!!!

Resturants around marinas, here in Marathon, and in places like the bahamas are I think more expensive. But they can be controlled by what you and where you eat. We have always ate out and we tend to not be beans and rice people so we expect maybe our costs are more than others. But we also try to control it so I think lots of people who comment are in the category of "not knowing" what they really spend. Eating out is also part of entertainment because you do that while out sight seeing, or just to get off the boat.
I hope the "medical" was for insurance, and not illness. want you to be healthy. I'm fairly healthy for a fat man who has had a heart attack. Most of the medical was for stress testing type of stuff and even though I didn't feel it was needed I changed doctors due to location and they of course needed to make money on me. I feel better knowing how well I passed all of it.
One last thing... was the "transportation cost" due to taxi's etc? or did you rent a car in your current port? Transportation included renting a car for week to travel for Christmas and all the expenses that go with that, some taxi rides here in Marathon to get big grocery runs back to the marina, some Uber rides here and there.
OH, and you got off pretty easy for gifts at Christmas!!!! I totally broke my budget this year. But nothing I like better than buying gifts for people... I really don't feel that $1700 put into the gifts tells the real story. I bet when you count things we got that we would have gotten ourselves it works out to less than $400 and most of that I bet was birthday presents
OH, and I agree.. thank you Mr. Trump for increasing my investments 30%! That's at least 3 years of a sailing kitty according to your budget!!! You misread my comment. I don't credit Trump with this at all as the market has been steadily increasing for at least 8 years.

I sometimes will even answer real questions
