Best Not Electric Coffee Maker

Usually we use our reliable Cuisinart for drip coffee. We have a small 316 stainless French stove top mocha pot. Nice for espresso size cups. We’ve looked at larger filter coffee makers but they are glass and look dangerous to use at sea.
Something seaworthy, capable of at least two mugs of coffee.
Thank you in advance for all replies.

We have a large stainless steel "french press". Double walled, keeps coffee hot (makes 4 cups). Looks good AND unbreakable!

A no. 4 cone drip coffee funnel like this one makes 2 large SS mugs of great coffee.

Re: Best Not Electric Coffee Maker

When my expensive coffee maker died, I went looking for a new one. One of the reasons I bought that particular coffee maker was that the carafe was stainless steel and not glass.

Long story short, I eventually questioned WHY I was buying a machine to heat water and pour it over coffee grounds.

Instead of a expensive, or even a cheap, coffee machine, I bought a stainless steel funnel. Yes, a funnel. That is all I really needed. A funnel.

I put the funnel in my stainless steel thermos or stainless steel carafe, place the coffee basket in said funnel, filled with coffee and sugar, then pour the heated water over the grounds. Nothing to break. Simple. Reliable. Cheap. I get to reuse the funnel for other jobs too.

I can heat the water in any number of ways so I can always have coffee.

Coffee makers are good example of the power of marketing.

Dan

Not very safe on a boat.

Agree the way they did it in the video on the counter top isn't safe, but that isn't how we do it.

I would love a 6 cup moka (actually a 3 cup would be good). Makes great coffee...unfortunately, that's 6 espresso shots not cups.

Glad you have a safe way to use it.

You can get 3 cup models too. I've even seen an itty-bitty single shot model.

Re: Best Not Electric Coffee Maker

On the boat I use a single cup electric coffee maker as it's simple, self contained, etc. And I can run the coffee maker off the inverter, but for anything else I'd either need to have an electric kettle aboard or I'd have to start the generator to use the electric stove.

But at home, I alternate between a Chemex and an Aeropress. The Aeropress is likely better suited to boat use, as it's not fragile, stores compactly, uses small filters that don't take up much storage space, etc.

Re: Best Not Electric Coffee Maker

We can recommend AeroPress when small quantities are desired, and Bialetti Oceana when larger quantities are needed.

The advantage of the AeroPress over many other press-style devices is that the grounds are easily disposed of with a simple twist of the filter holder and final press of the plunger. Zero mess.

Re: Best Not Electric Coffee Maker

I stumbled across this guy's site (sailorssolutions.com) a while back.

I put this coffee pot on my "to-buy" list once I get my galley working.

It is a french press and a vacuum insulated coffee pot in one. Stainless steel.

cheers
