Mayo, MD to Mobjack Bay

Hey folks looking for some anchorage and general trip advice. Looking to sail from Mayo, MD to Mobjack Bay on a Catalina 27. Planning for four days and plan on motoring whenever necessary. Wanting to do the trip in early august (barring any extreme weather) to move the boat into our slip in Mobjack.

I plan on starting wicked early every day to attempt o account for the light winds and late afternoon thunderstorms.

Thanks in advance, first time post here but always cruising the forums for great information.

Are you familiar with the basin and approach to Mobjack?

I am not. I’ve sailed in several areas of the bay but Mobjack will be new to me.

It’s pretty straight forward and well marked entrance to the basin. Just stay in the marks it get skinny quick, especially at low tide. I’ve seen 6ft draft stick until the water comes back in.

It’s a great little marina to base out of.

Re: Mayo, MD to Mobjack Bay

Where is the final destination in Mobjack Bay?

Fairly easy trip from Mayo S doing day trips.
1. From Mayo would do a stop in Solomons (~38nm). Could anchor in Back Creek near all the excitement or a quieter anchorage would be Mill Creek.
2. Second day, Solomons to Ingram Bay near Reedville (~40nm). Inside there many anchorages to choose from. In the bowl around Sandy Pt. is an easy out, but another Mill creek in the S. portion of Ingram Bay is very nice.
3. From Ingram could make it to Mobjack Bay/New Pt. Comfort the next day if you wanted (~35 nm). In settled weather you can anchor off NPC.

Many more great anchorages along the way if that pace was too quick. Only other advice is to watch out for the afternoon t'storms.

Re: Mayo, MD to Mobjack Bay

Mobjack Bay is one of my favorite places to sail up to.

The entrance is pretty straight forward, but it's real shallow NW of the Light.

I was trying to sneak in close to it one time coming in from the North, but saw the low water waves and turned just before running aground.

Then I had to sail against the wind for a while to get in position to round it.

I usually go in all the way and turn left into the Severn River.

It's very protected in there if you ever needed a good protected spot.

It was great one October when a front came rolling in in the morning while I was leaving Kiptopeke.

Photo's from Mobjack Bay and old video. (BTW I redid my boat's interior soon after this with new paint, shades, lamps, custom settee cushion etc)

I was quite tired as I filmed that anchor scene as the sail across had been interesting as the temperature went from 87 degrees to about 68 degrees as that front rolled in.

You can see the headland for Mobjack Bay in the sail over video at the top of the screen to the right a bit off center.

I believe this was mid October 2018.

Kiptopeke to Mobjack Bay then returning to Virginia Beach the next day

Re: Mayo, MD to Mobjack Bay

During the season, we usually have nice SW prevailing winds so returning to Virginia Beach from Mobjack Bay on a SSE Heading early in the morning (usually a Sunday Morning) is always something I enjoy.....

I usually check the forecast before I head North on a Thursday or Friday and hope for 15-20 knots SW winds for Sunday AM.

Many times other boats are heading back too or coming out of their respective creeks.
