Re: Seafarer’s Songs

Surprised no mention of Christopher Cross' "Sailing" yet...a bit over played in its day.

Sting's Soul Cages album has some good nautical themed songs. Great lyrics, some a bit dark, but I really like them.

Balance Sting's dark lyrics with a bit of humor from Eileen Quinn. 😆

If you havent OD'ed on Buffet-like tropi-rock yet then Jim White has some nice tunes.

Dan Fogleberg "The Reach" & "Mistral".

Im not a big country music fan but Garth Brooks "The River" is a great song.

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

An Aussie balladeer/sailor friend who recently completed a circumnavigation told me he believes that 'Carrying Nelson Home' by Mike O'Connor is the finest sea song ever written. It tells the story of returning Lord Nelson's body home after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar (in a keg of brandy).

There are many versions of this tune - this is just one of them:

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

surprised noone mentioned bay warriors anthem:

"Queen is watching me from the distance"

I sign it all the time but only when motoring in harbour.

Sailors Boots, by Frank Turner

I've tried three different ways to copy a link to the YouTube video but it just doesn't look like it's possible on the sailors forum app (go figure)

Great song, and it's easy to figure out on guitar too

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

I was going to suggest a Country Joe and the Fish song but perhaps this one is a better fit... surprised it's not on the list yet!

Gifted songwriter. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live a few years ago. Of the songs he wrote, either himself or with his trio:

- Saben the Woodfitter
- The Ways of Man
- The Sea Wife (words by Rudyard Kipling)
- Wreck of the Green Cove

Among the songs by others he brought to a wider audience:
- I's the b'y (trad)
- Wreck of the Bay Rupert (Larry Kaplan)
- Wee Dark Engine Room (Harry Robertson)
- Boat of Silver (J. Goodenough)
- Clear away in the morning (trad)

I was once part of a band that specialized in unusual material with a nautical theme. Our setlist included:
- Sailors' Prayer (Rod MacDonald) (Also recorded by Gordon Bok)
- Lover's Wreck (Gaelic Storm)
- High Barbary (trad)
- Essequibo River (trad)
- Away Rio (trad)
- Barque in the Harbor (Great Big Sea)
- Wave Over Wave (Great Big Sea)
- Marching Inland (Tom Lewis)

Other songs of interest:
- Traighli Bay (Tanglefoot)
- Northwest Passage (Stan Rogers)
- The Mary Ellen Carter (Stan Rogers)

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

Also "Waiting for Isabella," excellent ballad of 19th century polar exploration written by a doctor named Allen Power and never recorded by a major act. I learned it from the Herdman, Hills and Mangsen recording at the request of the husband of a former bandmate; it came to be one of my favorites.

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

In addition to Old Polina by Great Big Sea

The Mermaid
Old Black Rum
I'm a Rover
The Night Pat Murphy Died
Drunken Sailor
The River Driver
Excursion on the Bay
Wave over Wave
A Boat like Gideon Brown

not all seafaring but having to do with drinkin and women
seems appropriate.

Re: Seafarer’s Songs

Stan Rogers with many sea & boat songs is my favourite artist. Most on youtube.

Another thread reminded me of "Sailing Shoes" by Little Feat.
