Anchorage outside of marina

Hi all. So, the other day, I inadvertently found an anchorage just out past 2 different marinas. Apparently neither marina nor the coast guard knew about the anchorage. One of them called the coast guard on me while I was fishing. It so happens that the marina that called is the same one I am trying to join. Mostly because I don't want a hassle come haul out time and winter storage. I could anchor out there all summer and then look for winter storage when the time comes. I welcome any thoughts on the subject.

Thanks,

Bill

OK, what did the CG state or imply you were doing wrong? There are many possibilities. Was it the CG or a state/local authority?

The CG said we were fine. They checked their charts and had to call DNR to confirm the anchorage. Now that it's been confirmed, the marina is more angry. I suspect that is partly due to them thinking I will tell the entire boating community.

So... I don't really understand the problem. You anchored, presumably in a safe location outside of any normal transiting routes. You were not obstructing traffic, and not putting anyone in danger... So, what's the issue?

I don't really get the need to check with authorities (what's DNR?) to confirm an anchorage, but sounds like you found a nice spot. Why the marina cares is beyond me -- unless they think it's not a safe place to anchore?

No, that's not what they do. They are a bit of a cross between our parks department and ministry of environment. They have zero input on navigation. They will come after you for pollution from a boat.

Two reasons, other than safety, I can think of are lost revenue (gee, if you anchor out there you won't use our slips.) and/or aesthetics (all those boats out there ruin the view for our customers.)

This doesn't mean they're good reasons, just possible reasons.

I'm not familiar with DNR up that way but my experience with DNR in the SE-US is on par with any of the other alphabet boys (DHS, ICE, CG, SO). Law enforcers and revenuers.

Re: Anchorage outside of marina

In Lakefront Promenade park in Mississauga there is Port Credit Yacht Club and Lakefront Promenade Marina (city owned) in a large basin with room for anchoring.

The manager of the city marina routinely had the cops (who docked at that marina) tell people they could not anchor in that basin. I got so annoyed by this governmental bullying that every time I saw the cop boat approach an anchored boat I'd go over in my dinghy and tell the cops they had no jurisdiction as this is a federal harbour operating under the Canada Shipping Act. They ungraciously backed off every time.

Re: Anchorage outside of marina

I think it's mostly because I wasn't using a slip.

As far as I know, most boaters prefer you not to fish from the slips. Nobody wants fishing line to get caught up in their props.
