This seemed to be the best category for this thread.

Years ago, I heard a captain that used to helm a 60 (or so) Hatteras say that anytime they went on long journeys, they'd travel well armed. In other words, a couple of weapons. According to him, they would leave San Juan, Puerto Rico and travel up to New York. Stops along the way, I don't know, but that is besides the point.

I've haven't been been on such a long journey like that. I would usually jump from island to island down the Caribbean. But, eventually I would like to do some long distance cruising. I've thought about whether I should be armed or not, for such a journey.

What is your take on being armed for long distance cruising?

If you do a search you will find numerous, very lengthy threads already written about this topic. Discussions about guns on boats tend to take the wrong course. I'm not saying this one will or will not but please everyone, keep the discussion within the forum rules.

If you're going to cruise internationally, most countries will require you to hand in any firearms on entry. If you don't hand them over you'll be breaking the law in those countries, which could have serious consequences if you're caught.

I had told someone earlier this week about using the search button in the lower tool bar and got totally ripped for it. Like I was some killjoy trying to stop a topic. I still reiterate it though that the best way to approach a topic before posting is to search. Like Ram said...there is a looooong thread on this one.

Thanks for the links Gord. I apologize. I'm not new to forums, I should've searched for this topic before posting, like I do with most other questions.

I guess I ended up posting first, simply because of the unique story that has haunted me for years. (What I mention in my first post). It's not much of a story... But, as a kid, just imagine... You're maybe 6 or 8 years old and some 'ol captain is talking about crossing oceans, armed to the teeth, pirates, bermuda, yada, yada... You get the picture...

Now older and with a family the story turns into... "How do I keep my family safe?"

Before we left for a five year cruise in dodgy areas we asked ourselves the same question.

I must also mention that I had cruised and patrolled the same waters in the navy in a destroyer, so I guess I had some idea of what we would face.

The bottom line for us was when I saild to the wife, IF we do decide to arm ourselves, the minute we bring the gun or guns on deck, we have declared a fight to the death. WE did not arm ourselves.
