Re: The GIANT Performance Catamaran Build/Refit Thread

I look at it this way: there are 2 kinds of weight. Useful weight (like air conditioning, ground tackle, etc.) and useless weight that can be removed, re-designed to be lighter, etc.

Bingo.

That’s how i see it too.

Some stuff you just gotta have. My 80llbs anchor could be lighter. I could go to an all chain ride. But it’s a slippery slope of returns.

The most bang for the pound is my goal.

I agree completely.

Stripper poles should be exempt from weight calculations!

Agreed.

Congrats on your progress.

Cheers.
Paul.

Just get a lighter stripper to offset the weight difference.

Re: The GIANT Performance Catamaran Build/Refit Thread

Doing a couple screens.

Tried Velcro and it didn’t work at all. Luckily I tried it on the screen first so none was applied to the boat.

Falls right off the screen and would require sewing. No thanks!!!

So then I took some 1/8” plywood, cut 3/4” strips from it, and sandwiched the screen in between using Fuze-it adhesive.

I’ll get some of these to hold them in place.

Note: the reason the bottom left bit of the screen frame is so messy is that was my first bead with the new caulking gun. It was pushing a partially dried tube and the dry chuck flew out and sprayed adhesive everywhere. Ugh. The rest went smoothly.

I forgot to mention that bit. My hatch screen has the velco sewn to the screen and adhered on the hatch frame.

Is that for a hatch or a roof top A/C unit?

A/C. No thru hulls below the waterline philosophy is intact.

There will be an additional hatch to see the sails further forward.

It’s a little strange looking. I’ll agree. Looks weirder than I thought it would. But not too bad.

Best part though? No maintenance and just buy a new one if it breaks. No seacocks, no salt water pump, no salt water heat exchanger or zincs. Just turn them on when needed and it’s cold.

Oh yeah. They also weigh less.

If they’re RV style roof top A/C’s they will be much more efficient than the standard water cooled marine units. Are you putting 2 in your bridgedeck cabin? If so you should be able to hang meat in there!

Ha ha ha!!!!

The solar gain from all of my windows in Florida it is just something incredible. I could bake meat in here without them. LOL

But yes. Definitely a lot more efficient than the marine units.

It’s set up in a way so that the bridge deck can get cold, and then that cold can drop down into the hulls also.

Heating will be the exact opposite. Heat the hulls and let it rise to the bridge deck.

And I did not go with tinted windows. We are going to use some window treatments to use the windows in different ways. We will be rolling things down and up depending on what we are looking for from the window. They actually have window tints that you can roll up and down. So when I want heat in the bridge deck, I can raise them up, letting full solar heat in. When I am trying to keep heat out, I can roll them down to block it. And then we will also have blackout shades on top of all of that.

Windows and heat gain and everything is a bit more of a set of problems than most boats because we are all windows.

Some of this extra over the top stuff is because of my health issues. There are times when it is hot out, when you would just open up and enjoy the warm air, but that I still have to close up to avoid the pollution. So I have a very specially designed boat. It’s actually a little pod that is creating good, clean, breathable air for somebody who can’t breathe pollution.

Update on the use of silicone for the coves. It’s coming out good!
