Propane Consumption

Good Evening All!

As part of a refit of a Contest 35, I've arrived at the propane system. I am rethinking the current propane storage and delivery systems. Thirty five years ago I circumnavigated, but for the life of me I can't remember how long my propane lasted and therefore how often I had to refill the bottles.

So, my question to the forum is: how long does a 20 lb bottle of propane last for a live aboard couple using it exclusively in the galley. There are of course lots of variables, but I'm interested in peoples' experiences such that I can bracket the various responses.

Thanks all!

Re: Propane Consumption

Coastal ( anchored each night ) in a cold climate with 2 or 3 aboard my 4.5kg / 10lb tanks last at least 4 weeks.... hot breakfast 50% of the time, soup or similar for lunch, cooked dins....

They last longer when 'on passage'.

I carry 3 and budget on 1 month each.

Re: Propane Consumption

Full time cruosing we get 10-12 weeks out of a 20lb tank. You'll need to tanks, as they are sometimes away for a few days when getting them filled, as well as being hard to know how much is in tbe tank.

The composite tanks are nice, we have one. Some places they are a pain to refill or not allowed to be refilled. NZ is a no. Australia requires recert for composite tank in 5 years and carefully hides as a state secret any place that could do the recert.

Re: Propane Consumption

When I was full-time on board, 20 lbs (9 kg) tank lasted at least 3 months, cooking every dinner, lunch on occasions, oven used rarely, 1 to 2 persons on board.
