Re: Possible easier way to replace a halyard

Really, everyone uses #2?
About $3 buys you enough messenger line to do #1 which leaves the old halyard intact that you can use for a spare, or if you dont need it, im sure plenty others would appreciate the donation.
Why destroy anything when its so easy to do it "right"
To each his own i guess....

Yes, absolutely. This is the way to go and using method #1. The safest, easiest, and most secure. Just a short length of soft 3mm braid (VB cord) joining a mousing line (with permanent eye in it like the halyard).

I do this at the end and start of each season, pulling 'winter lines' through, and storing the halyards away. I have done a video on it, but really its pretty easy, and as long as a few things are observed, the chance of losing a halyard is very low.

Agree - the old line is useful.

+1 I usually whip the ends of both with a couple of tight turns to anchor the end to end stitching. If you do it right, you can do it with one continuous length of twine.

On the occasions I've had to replace halyards, the old halyard was deteriorated enough that it was time to cut it up to use for fender lines, gaskets, etc. New-to-me boats...

Yeah, me. I use method 3 (not listed). I never put an eye splice in a halyard. Lots of more important or enjoyable things to do with my time. Use a bowline to attach the shackle, then no cutting is necessary. And you can change the wear point easily.
