Most likely a spinnaker halyard.
I have one but no spinnaker, but I use it to hoist the dinghy on board.

If it has two forestays (cutter rig) it could be for the inner headsail.

What's your boat's design and builder? That would help us sort it out. More than likely it is a spinnaker halyard if the attachment to the sail is on the forward side of the mast and led through a swivel block.

If it is on the aft side of the mast it is likely a topping lift for the boom, if on the forward side a spinny halyard as mentioned above.

Depends on how the halyard is attached on the mast. If it comes off a block on the front of the mast then the suggestion would be a spinnaker for a sloop rig or a jib for a cutter rigged vessel.
If it goes out the aft side of the mast the it could be a boom topping lift. Knowing the type of vessel would help.

Could be a topping lift.
Give it a jiggle and see where it goes. Find the other end and your mystery will be solved. Don't forget to let us know here too...we are a curious bunch.

Re: New used sailboat. 3 sail lines main sail halyard, jib halyard and ???
My Cal 2-27 has 5 halyards: main, jib, spinnaker, topping and staysail. Is there a track on the deck in front of the mast midline? Are there deck pulleys inside and outside of the shrouds?
Some people have an extra halyard to aid in going up the mast.
Disclaimer: rigging is not my forte.
