Mystery bedding material

In a couple of spots on my mast I see things bedded in this kind of pasty looking bedding. It is off-white and fairly hard, if you pick at it with an awl it is crumbly. Does anyone know what it is? It seems to have held up pretty well. If not, what do people generally use to seal things up on an aluminum mast?

Re: Mystery bedding material

Looks like old butyl tape. It gets crumbly when it is old and needs to be replaced.

Re: Mystery bedding material

Really, thought it stayed soft-ish forever-ish. It probably has been on there for a really long time though.
