My keel is bleeding red

Boat came out today found dime size blister over keel/stubby seam when pierced and squeezed produced a red dribble 'bout 5" long.

Wet sanded and found more "marks" along the seam but none wept.

Should I?

Re: My keel is bleeding red

Should you what???

If it is brownish red, as opposed to blood red, it may be rust. Iron keel?

Re: My keel is bleeding red

Is it red as in the color of rust? Got any photos? I guess you are wondering if you need to drop the keel to check all the keel bolts?

Re: My keel is bleeding red

The C&C MkV [mid ‘80s] has an external [bolted] 1,715lb/778kg lead keel.
IIRC, the keel bolts/nuts used square mild steel washers, inside the keel stub/sump.

Several owners advised to “watch out” for hull blisters, & keel/rudder problems:

An old time designer, William Atkin, was fond of using galvanized bolts with lead keels.
And several time in his writings he said that such a combination would give good service for 20>25 years.
I don't know the age of the OPs boat, but the oldest Mk-Vs are now ~40 years old.
Why oh why would C&C use steel instead of bronze?
For that little amount of keel weight, the cost difference for the bolts would hardly have been more than the cost of a decent VHF radio.

Thanks for that post.
It jogged some old memory cells, and you might have an answer.
Could that joint between lead keel and fiberglass perhaps have been slathered with red lead as a sealing compound?
I know it was accepted/common practice on wooden craft.

Re: My keel is bleeding red

So, thanks Gord (that C&C forum is moribund), and everbody else.

It's not the joint - holes are above - coincidental placement I guess. Seems that someone used a red compound or something that wasn't really water proof caused the bubble. Apparently common on these boat as per the Facebook page that the joint does need attention but mine seems zippered up tight. Plus yardguy I trust cinched up keelbolts 4yr ago when I first acquired boat.

Anybody ever apply antifoul over gel coat w/o primer tie coat?
