Fiberglass propane tanks

I found a tank made from composite material for sale on amazon. Its more expense than a steel tank, but much lighter and smaller in diameter. I can get two 30-lb tanks in the locker instead of the tow 20-lb tanks I currently have.

Anyone have experience with these type of tanks?

I've got them too...they're great and I wouldn't go back. The only consideration that you might have is whether you can get them filled in the areas that you sail. I have no problem as they are sold extensively around where I live.

We've also got fiberglass tanks. They're the best thing since sliced bread!

Where have you had problems with getting them refilled?

Re: Fiberglass propane tanks

I'm a big fan of fiberglass propane tanks. I've got an 11 pound tank to fuel my 2.5 hp Lehr outboard and a 33 pound forklift tank to fuel my 15 hp Lehr.

There was a company that made a bunch of defective tanks. They went out of business when they were forced to recall them. I don't know if there are any of these left out there. Composite Propane Cylinder Emergency Recall

I think there is only one company making them now, but they are sold under at least three names, Lehr, Trident and Viking. All the same tank, just different colors.

DMKsails, can you post a link to the tank you're interested in?

If you go into remote areas, they generally will not have large fill tanks to re-fill your f/g or aluminum specialty tanks. They will have 20# steel tanks that you could purchase and then figure out a fill adapter or easier yet is to just have steel tanks ready to exchange if they don't have a fill tank.

While not as fancy as the f/g tanks, the steel tanks are inexpensive and when they start to rust, exchange them.

Cheers,
Bill O.

We had the hardware store in St. James City on Pine Island Fl. refuse to fill our fiberglass tank. Supposedly the owner didn't trust the tanks.

Re: Fiberglass propane tanks

For those crossing the Pacific, beware that you cannot legally fill the composite tanks in New Zealand. We have one composite and one aluminum. The composites are nice because you can see the fluid level in them.
