Cushion foam source

Hi all. Getting set for upcoming season and would like to replace my cushion foam(s).
Would appreciate any advice on which grade / density of foam and any good dealer reference.
Thx a bunch.

Re: Cushion foam source

I googled "upholstery foam" and found several places that sell foam and ship quickly. I don't remember what density I got, but a phone call to the place answered several questions about the right density to get.
It wasn't hard to find either foam outlets or answers.

I get most of my canvas and upholstery stuff from Sailrite.com. Thier sewing machines are very expensive but the supplies are at good prices, and they give excellent customer service. They have about every kind of foam and fabric you could want and tutorials to help you decide which to buy.

Re: Cushion foam source

Foam Factory in Michigan https://www.foambymail.com/ has a wide variety of foam densities and where we purchased the foam for our interior cushions (years ago). We also purchased closed cell foam from them for the cockpit cushions.

Not sure if shipping, taxes/duty to Canada would make it worth while, but free shipping in the US.

Re: Cushion foam source

I would look into foam shops in Montréal.

We went to a local foam shop (British Columbia: "The Foam Shop") and had a wonderful V-berth matress with nice cover made up.

Same price as national online outlets, but much better as we were able to go to shop and discuss mattress types, dimensions, and upholstery AND actually see/feel materials.

Would be similar process for other cushions.

Also good to shop local.

(Makes no sense for someone in Canada to be given USA outlets....)

Sailrite. You will also find some good guidance on what type of foam to get for your application. I recently made new cushions for our cockpit and went with a high density closed cell foam. They wont hold water, feel great, and dry fast.

Re: Cushion foam source

If you want an online retailer, my favourite source of marine fabrics etc is JT's Outdoor Fabrics in Ontario, they also sell upholstery foam ...

BUT ... I will echo the recommendation to find a local foam shop. Not only will you be able to compare foams with what you are replacing, and save on shipping, but Boat cushions often involve complex shapes, and they will cut them for you. Cutting foam with a knife makes messy ragged edges and a good foam cutter isnt cheap and you may never need it again.

Re: Cushion foam source

I took paper templates to the local foam shop. (Then I took the cut mattresses to a local mom and pop upholstery shop.) The foam shop had 2 different densities and they encouraged me to go with the more firm one if I was sitting on them. I went with the LESS firm because I am far more concerned about how they feel to sleep on. As it turned out even the less firm still is a bit too firm for me but I can live with them. I also had the new covers cut to fit more loosely to keep the firmness down too. I went with faux leather covers, easy to wipe clean and repel liquids. At first I thought I'd be going with some kind of fabric but I am glad I didn't.

Actually I have a USA PO box just south of the border so it does make sense to send American references.
Thx for the suggestions.

Re: Cushion foam source

Also, my intention is to simply replace the foams in the Vberth and seat cushions. The upholstery itself is in relatively good shape so no need to replace. However the cushions are only 3" thick...including the Vberth (this is not a luxury cruiser...LoL ;-). My research thus far suggests to go with latex foam but if it's limited to 3", which density would provide the most comfort (this is subjective of course)?
Thx again for the input.

Re: Cushion foam source

I bought mine at Jo Anne's Fabrics.

I shrink wrapped them for additional moisture resistance.

Re: Cushion foam source

"only 3" thick... "

A proper foam shop will glue foam together to obtain a thicker cushion/mattress.

We stayed away from latex as it can be hot.
