Raise floor? No way. See point about Swanson interior and the scar tissue forming on my forehead.

CCTV… see my idea about four lcd screens.

Wait till you see my plans for the cockpit! It is going to be awesome. I plan to live up there. But not in winter in Tasmania, that’s a step too far.
Easy fix - don't spend winter in Tasmania.
If you are there in winter there is nothing to be gained by looking out your windows - it will be grey and bleak - and very, very depressing.

Actually, winter in Tassie was pretty special.

Minus two in the cabin was a bit of a trial tho.

Gotta try the place out in summer next time.

Wow, really glad you didn't post a pic about that, my eyes could have been scarred for life!

Besides the peeping Tom end of it, having "stuff" out in plain sight can be a security issue. Living in large cities, if you had anything of value in plain view in your car you were very likely to have your windows smashed to steal that item. To a thief, even a jacket on the floor behind the seat could be potentially concealing something.

The Phifertex inserts in the hull ports allowed you to look out w/o anyone being able to look in.

After owning boats for twenty years I no longer have anything of value to leave out.

But I do use a very faintly tinted Perspex for my hatches to give some privacy.

Hey… I know, how about four small LCD screens wired to external cameras…?

That's a great idea, you could place the screens where you reckon the topside ports would go.

C'mon Ping, just because we don't have glaciers carving into the sea here in Tassie doesn't mean its all grey and drab.

We looked at a KP 44, and I remember it being a bit dim. I'm sure the fixed ports would be a great addition.

This thread is turning ugly...
I suppose part of it can be tarted up.
Leaving the deadlights out could be a good start.

Removing all of the dark teak has made it a LOT lighter, in both senses of the word.

Gilow, I am glad to hear you removed all that dark teak. It looks like you have a big project ahead of you......... Can you get a 1200mm wide sheet of plywood down below?

Cheers

The new boat, a Kelly Peterson 44 has no such luxury. All twelve of the bronze portlights are on the side of the cabin trunk and the only way to see anything other than sky is to perform a chin-up or stand on the settee.

Next to me is a shiny new Sun Odyssey with two lovely deadlights per side, one positioned about midships, aft of the chain plates, about where they’d be great on the KP44.

So, the KP44 is three quarters of an inch of solid fibreglass at that point. Provided I steered clear of the chain plates I figure it should be safe to add some deadlights.

Thoughts? Matt
Seems like you should have thought about that before you bought the boat.

I'm not one who desires to make wholesale changes to an original design. Besides, I don't particularly like these rectangular topsides deadlights I see on the new production boats...it just breaks up the lines of the boat. Then there is the possibility of leaks. And the thought of all the work and expense just because I can't see lying down? No, not me.

But it seems important to you. Maybe you should have bought the Sun Odyssey.

Umm... besides some significant differences in design and build philosophy, there is a cataclysmic difference in price between those vessels that might have influenced the decision.

But I agree that the rectangular black patches in the topsides are dog ugly to my eye and add nothing to the already blocky appearance of the boat. Tastes vary!
