KiwiGrip on old 2 component PU paint, do I need to paint new PU before application?

Hi,

we have some areas where we want to apply KiwiGrip on our deck.
These areas of the plywood deck had been painted with an epoxy undercoat and 2 component Polyurethane paint few years back.

This PU paint is fairly dull, but not at all flaking off, by now.
As far as I know KiwiGrip is not waterproof in itself and needs a layer of watertight paint underneath.

Question should I apply a new layer of bicomponent PU underneath the KiwiGrip before applying the KiwiGrip or is it enough to apply the KiwiGrip onto the old PU.
The KiwiGrip obviously protects the PU underneath than from further sun damage.

Extra layer of PU is fairly expensive and an extra step of work.

Of course will give the PU a thorough cleaning and light sanding before applying KiwiGrip.

Thanks for your thoughts.

You won't have a bonding issue with the Kiwigrip on the old paint. If it's still adhered well, and was primed ahead of time, you should be fine applying kiwigrip right over the top.

On our aluminum boat - a material notorious for being difficult to keep paint on - we had a few places that the paint roller got away from us and we got kiwigrip on bare metal outside our masking tape line. These areas hadnt been cleaned, had oil marks, oxidation, and every other bad practice possible, yet the Kiwigrip held for the four years we had the boat with zero failures. For a water based paint, it has crazy adhesion.
