White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

Hi to evryone, i hope all of you are having a great weekend

I took the ownership of a fantastic moody 27 for my first sailboat.

The engine is reaconditioned 4 months ago, and maybe does not have more tha 10 hours running. Even if the engine is running quite smoth, the white smoke never ends.

I have a couple more quick questions:

1. I'm noticing white smoke, but the exhaust elbow is cold when the engine is running, indicating water in the system. Since the exhaust serves as the water line, do you have any idea what might be causing this on a refurbished Volvo Penta 2002?

I also leave you 2 videos i have done with my spanglish...
2. The sea water strainer is from factory so i will change to a new vetus filter type above the water line, on the paper work (image attached) says the water flow need 1.1 US Galon than i think is 41 liters, so a water filter of 51 liters will be ok? Please let me know your thoughts

I really appreciate all your help. Many thanks.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

White smoke is either coolant leaking into combustion or just a simple condensation fog (read nothing to worry about).

You say “a really cold day”, what temp was it?

If it’s colder, i.e. +10C or less the exhaust fumes often start to condensate (white fog).

See if you loose coolant after longer running (comparison level must be checked when cold). If loses and/or If it white-smokes even on warm days I’d retighten engine head (by manufacturer spec pattern and torque) for a start.

If no help, then maybe head gasket maybe shot.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

A brand new [or fully re-conditioned] diesel engine, running at full load, may experience a little bit of blow-by, upon startup.
Blow-by is a condition where diesel fuel, air and vapor are pushed past the rings, into the crankcase of the engine. Correct pressure should be maintained in the cylinder chamber, in order for proper combustion to occur.
In a new [or refurbished] diesel engine, the rings need time to seat properly, and develop an air-tight seal. After a short period of break-in hours, under load, the blow-by problem should correct itself.

However:

BLOWBY is the emission of crankcase pressure (and fumes/smoke) out the crankcase ventilation system, and generally regarded as a clear indication of an urgently needed, and expensive, engine rebuild.

WHITE SMOKE usually occurs when raw [unburned] diesel comes through the exhaust, or from water entering combustion spaces. When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings, and/or cylinder glazing.

Chances are insuring the rebuild the injection pump was set to factory settings at TDC or even advanced a bit. Retarding the timing a bit should clear it up. If not then start looking for coolant/water leaks but at this time and after a rebuild my bets on fuel and timing.

First question is who rebuilt/reconditioned the engine?

Was it Jim Bob down the street or a factory rebuild with a guarantee?

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

What does "reconditioned" or even "rebuilt" engine mean ?
I have heard these terms used for a filter change, paint job and valve adjustment.

My one and only "rebuild" included new pistons, rings, injectors, cylinders, heat exchanger, cam shaft, valves, cylinder head and all bearing along with rebuilt injection pump, turbo, intercooler and heat exchanger ... basically everything except the block.

How about no thermostat, its directly raw water cooled so if the thermostat was either left out or not sending cooling water to the right place that might make er smoke, she’d have trouble getting even a little bit warm with direct cooling flow through the block. . This engine has 2 injector pumps and adjusting the timing is a fairly long procedure

Give them a call on the phone, they seem to have a good reputation and are authorised dealers for Vetus, Bukh , Baudoin, Shire and a few others, so not a fly by night operation. But first check your engine temperature under full load, something isn’t quite right about the cold exhaust manifold and mixer.

Diagnosing diesel exhaust "smoke". Black, blue or 2 types of white.

http://www.sailingncruising.com/boat...smoke-exhaust/

VP 2000 series water lift muffler system can cause puffs of steam & shots of water due to the height that water must be lifted from muffler to outlet.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

I have had white smoke from a diesel when the prop picked up fouling & could not spin easily. I have also encountered it when I was trying to motor into a heavy blow with a high pitch prop. Both cases where examples of high torque load on the engine.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

Hold your hand, or a piece of paper over the exhaust (not to block it just to catch the 'smoke') for 10 -15 seconds. Then examine and smell any residue. If it smells like diesel, then you have white smoke, not steam. Also examine the water behind the exhaust. Any shiny, oily slick? if so, its white smoke unburnt diesel.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

How old is the diesel in your tank and has the tank been cleaned?
Boatpoker I thought an oil change and new paint was considered a rebuild.
Cheers
