Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

I had a 2002 for over 15 years, now have another boat with the 2003.

When I saw your exhaust video, I was surprised how little water was ejected at high revs. I also took note of the white steam. Was your engine temp guage lighting up? Your exhaust elbow should be very hot due to the raw exhaust passing through, The water wont pass if the elbow is blocked, thus the steam.

When you described the temperature difference between the over flow line and the exhaust elbow seems pretty certain your elbow is plugged with carbon. Volvo manufactures the elbow in cast iron, so they usually plug up after 200 hours, and yours was probably already plugged before the engine rebuild. HDMI manufactures the elbow in 316 ss, and sells them for less than OEM cast iron. Carbon wont stick to stainless. My ss elbow has over 350 hours, no smoke.

Run the motor up to full operating temp, to verify water is circulating, and the raw water impeller is working. If you still have the same conditions, start with the elbow.

Any questions feel free to PM me.

White smoke, if it stinks it's unburned diesel, if not it's water. 1st case it's most likely injector. Bluish smoke engine oil, black smoke overloading..

I think its not enough cooling sea water flowing through the system .... thats what I would be checking.

Please give us a feedback when you know....

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

Just watched your videos again.
You have a raw water cooled VP2002.
The "white smoke" is definitely steam-not fuel or oil.

Your exhaust outlet seems to be partially below surface of water.
Is that causing more steam because hot exhaust is hitting cold ocean,or because back pressure is created, causing cooling water to stay in exhaust/muffler longer than normal??

Compared to my VP2003,your exhaust water volume looks normal & spurts the same.

Engine is running normally & no sign of overheating.
If water was getting into cylinders(head gasket),I don't believe it would run that well. If water is leaking into block somehow, your lube oil would be milky.
Cheers/Len

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

White smoke can also be caused by getting air into your fuel from a connection or faulty lift pump, although most often would clear after a few minutes or when motoring.

I would say flow is more than enough, you have nothing to cool unless you’re going hard.
This will rule out the pump and the quality of fuel / Tank as mentioned in other posts

Keep an eye on your oil level as well.

Maybe run it off a clean can of diesel bypassing your lift pump. - replace your fuel filter - bear in mind it could even be the filter housing.

Air in a fuel system will shut the engine down before it gets a chance to smoke.

The white smoke indicates that a new Pope has been elected.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

I had a 52 Bene that smoked white at high revs and the culprit was the charter company repairman had replaced the exhaust hose with a garden hose variety that was kinking and not allowing air replacement in the tank. Found out when the smoke disappeared when I open the gill cup. Try it the white smoke may go away.

- What tank in your exhaust system was being denied air ?

Garden hose exhaust kinking? I think you confusing the fuel tank vent with the exhaust?

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

Propably best to ask a mechanic... You will get a dozen guesses why your Volvo smokes white vapour.
Since the engine has been worked on I throw my guess into the mix as well
Faulty head gasket, coolant getting into the combustion chamber.
Coolant in your case is raw water...
Check your engine oil... Milkshake?
It's a start
Check head bolt torque with a torque wrench
Replace head gasket if no improvement

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

I edited my earlier post but it did not take effect. The air breathing hose was kinking been a garden hose. I uncovered the issue by opening the diesel tank filling cap and the white smoke went away.

Re: White Smoke new reaconditioned Volvo penta 2002

Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a fantastic week.

I was able to get a mechanic on Thursday.

He informed me than a white smoke is for the water temperature, and the engine is running perfectly. According to him, the smoke should not appear during the summer. No diesel sign in water

Tomorrow, we will be motoring for two hours, so hopefully, everything is sorted.

I truly appreciate all the comments from everyone. I will continue to provide updates, hoping it helps others facing a similar situation.

The gill cup was introduced in the 14th century, to measure individual servings [4 US Oz] of whiskey, rum, or wine.
