Re: Westerbeake 40 or Perkins 108

As for Perkins oil leaks one bit of unscheduled maintenance I solved Most 75%
of my oil leaks simply by tightening and snuging up "every" bolt on engine starting at oil pan ending at valve cover they were all loose.be sure to get all of them.

Re: Westerbeake 40 or Perkins 108

TransAtlantic Diesel in Virginia +++ I just drove over and picked up a lift pump (they also ship) Spoke to the owner who has had it for 35+ years, he is VERY knowledgeable and any parts no longer available they will machine.

They are now my first stop for parts for my 4-108. The price is a tad higher than some other places I found the pump but I have no problem paying a bit for knowledge and friendliness.

He went out of his way to stand around and explain things to a "new to engine repair" sailor.

Westerbeke parts are generally available but not cheap. A good source in Canada is Anthony Keats Marine, Anthony Keats Marine. I have found the people there to be quite helpful. As people have said, Westerbeke bought their engines all over the place so you need to pin down the equivalent model used outside boats. We had a Westerbeke 58 which was a Mitsubishi tractor engine. These engines were common in Europe but did not appear to have been used in North America. Our Westerbeke proved quite reliable in an old-tech kind of way.

4108 parts:
https://maxiforce.com/perkins-engine-parts
https://www.parts4engines.com/ in the UK, but reasonable and quick shipping.
https://www.foleyengines.com/ expensive and sometimes poor customer service.
Perkins 4.108 Diesel Inframe-Overhaul Engine Rebuild Kit
4108s were used in tractors, generators, and as pump engines. Many good tractor supply stores carry Perkins parts and are cheaper than any marine dealer.
For replacement heat exchanger or parts:
Custom & Stock Marine Heat Exchangers & Cooling Systems - Orca, WA
http://www.seakamp.com/
https://lencocoolers.com/
https://www.ejbowman.co.uk/products/...Exchangers.htm
Perkins Marine Heat Exchangers
And there are others.

I have a spare Lucas starter (with drive) and 2 Sendor heat exchangers (12" that mounts on the back of the engine) that I would be willing to sell. Bob

Stay away from Foley Engines. I can't tell you how many reports of Foley conning his customers are floating around on the internet. From more than one report a rebuilt/refurbished engine means he painted an old takeout. My personal experience was a phone call with him where he started out annoyed because I called on his toll free phone number and went downhill from there.
