Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

you can add the Taswell 43, floor plan B, to that list of boats designed without access on the port side!

I am reluctant to criticise other sailboats, but I cannot understand the thinking of the boatbuilders.

Access to the important service requirements is essential.

FWIW: I have never been a fan of modern Yanmars, but this thread has cemented that previously vague opinion! Such a lack of concern for the ultimate user...

Hi Jim,

They have already fixed the problem if they have moved the pump to the front of the motor.

My IP40 has a fairly decent hatch to give access to that side of the motor unfortunately there is an engine mount preventing removal of the pump and the front of the starter motor is close to the pump.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Update/solution... had to disassemble engine to remove pump, see pictures
1. Support engine in order to remove engine mount.
2. Remove alternator
3. Remove hoses from pump...I had to cut one off
4. Remove engine mount
5. Remover 4 mounting bolts from pump
6. Remove pump, easier said than done. Had to break loose with rubber mallet. I can see that it will be a PITA to reinstall.

Awaiting parts to reassemble.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Thanks for the update, so did your pump have a gasket rather than an oring at the block joint? I’ll be interested to see what’s holding the impeller hub so tightly on the pump shaft.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Yes thanks for the update.
So many folks recommend replacing impellers yearly.
I presume the impeller was on for a long time and thus frozen to shaft.
Good work and please let us know more.

Now that it is out I would dither rebuild it, new seals etc or buy a new one.

My pump started to leak at 2,500 hours and as the engine mount needed to come out I had all 4 engine mounts replaced at the same time. Noticeable improvement in engine vibration.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Further update:
Ordered parts as follows
Yanmar Threaded Impeller p/n 129670-42610
Yanmar impeller puller p/n 129671-92110
Hose from pump to heat exchanger (had to cut
off)
Pump to block paper gasket
A 150 engine mount starboard side
A 200 engine mount port side.
(I figured since I already have the engine
supported and lifted, go ahead a change both
forward engine mounts. Its only money!

I am also going to use marine grade anti-seize designed for dissimilar metals on shaft and impeller. And ALL the bolts during reassembly. Also, see pix of the zip tie trick to aid inserting the
Impeller. A suggestion from one of our brilliant viewers.

Ordered through Seafarer Marine Supply out of Largo Fl
Phone 727-595-8813
All total close to $500.00

A huge Thanks to all for all the tips and suggestions.
Note: the impeller in the pix is not the threaded impeller listed above. The one in the pix is the actually p/n 129470-42532, which will work bout it is not threaded for using Yanmar puller. I'll keep it for an emergency spare.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

I've only replaced my motor mounts once before, and I'm getting closer to do it again. But is it a good idea to replace only the fronts, and not the backs? Everything I've read always addresses replacing all 4. And since you likely will need to re-align the prop shaft when done, I'd guess doing all 4 would make more sense...it's only money, not even a full boat unit yet!!!

Consider using Loctite 242 blue on your bolts/screws. Antivibration and anti-seize in one tube. Also prevents galling on stainless fasteners.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

JSurr,, I guess you had a lot more pain than I. I really appreciate this discussion, I too ordered the new an improved impeller and Puller from SeaFarer couple weeks ago when when I responded initially to this thread. Then I was looking through my parts, and for some reason (I'm glad I do this sometimes) I saved the impeller I removed, it has a piece missing from the vice-grips. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it IS the new and improved impeller, and the threaded side was installed backwards! Not that I would have noticed at that point, mind you. But when I started this project, I called the previous owner of the boat, and he didn't have much to offer me as far as tips on removal, he said he had it replaced when he was in the islands, as he looked at those cramped spaces and hired it out - (he is 6-4" tall). Apparently the Caribbean Mechanics were not up to speed on the orientation of the impeller. I hope I remember all this next time!

I hope you dont have to go through all that every time you need to change an impeller. Crazy.

Re: Requests for tips to remove impeller on 4JH Yanmar

Jsurr - I have a 4JH2-TE and am in the midst of this problem. All the Yanmar lit specifies 129470-42532, which superseded 42530, and 42531, and no one ever seems to confirm fitment for the threaded 4JH3 impellers and after (I believe the number of fins is different is about all I can tell). How did yours match up and work out ?

Please add Sceptre 43 to the list of builders without forward port side access to this engine ! I am boiling heat exchangers, exhaust elbows, and rebuilding turbos, and am basically just in a maintenance cascade at this point saying " while I have it apart!"
