Re: Perkins 4.236M heat exchanger

Hello Underdog, I hope you had a 'Singapore Gin Sling' in Raffles for me on your way through Singapore, and a safe flight. The details you requested are as follows.
www.asap-supplies.com are at Unit 8b,Ellough Industrial eastate,Beccles,Suffolk, tel UK (out of UK country code) is 0044) 01502-716993 Fax 01502-711680 they stock all Bowman parts you will need at a good price,
I have no connection with them except as a satified customer. If you ask them for a customer number you get a 10% discount, if you order online you also get a further 10%. I hope this helps you if you need any more info come back on post and I will help if I can. Safe Journey.

Re: Perkins 4.236M heat exchanger

Irish rambler, many thanks for that - I have another hour or so here before leaving for London - I will see if I can get an online order in before I leave. I am opposite Raffles now, by coincidence, but no Sling for me - I have to work.....
Beneteau-500, that sounds a good deal - I will look them up also. I have only a bit over two days in the UK this time, but will make a plane for next time to get up Birmingham way if it proves worth it.

Re: Perkins 4.236M heat exchanger

Beneteau-500, Maybe I can give you a call when I am in town there? If you have pics of your exchangers I am pretty sure I will be able to tell if they are the same as in my engine. My profile has my email for contact details - if you can pass a phone number to me that way? I will be staying near Lambeth reach, betweenL and Vauxhall Bridges on Albert Embankment, but can get about to any part of London obviously.

Re: Perkins 4.236M Heat Exchanger

G'day, Underdog. Keep an eye for us in the Bay of Islands when you make it over in the spring/summer. Yes, 2007-Pierre your right, one of these rainy days that heat exchanger might just get moved to another spot. Probably relocate the oil cooler as well. Not this rainy day though.

I run a 100 amp alternator with one V-belt (in the photo). I have replaced the fresh water pump once over the years, but haven't had any real trouble. I wouldn't go any larger though without going to 2 belts.

An FYI, Massy Ferguson used the 2-236 on their model 375 tractor from around 1986 to 1998. You might find cheaper priced alternatives for parts from those resources (they wouldn't be using a heat exchanger though). I bought a replacement water pump from NAPA in the states, W-14 for the spare parts bin. It's probably an Asian knockoff, but every captain gets to set his own risk/cost benefit ratios. Cheers.

Re: Perkins 4.236M heat exchanger

Although I have a Ford Lehman this thread has been really helpful. The end caps on my heat exchanger are exuding salt and I figure it's time for a rebuild. With respect to the use of vinegar, are you soaking the whole unit in 100% vinegar or a water/vinegar solution? How long do you usually need to soak it?
Cheers!

Re: Perkins 4.236M Heat Exchanger

I'ld pour boiling water over the salt first, then soak the parts in vinegar until all traces of salt are gone, then a further flush with boiling water, make sure the end caps are perfect, if all OK re-assemble using a proprietary jointing compound, (I use Hylomar)tighten hose clips allow to rest while you take a coffee/beer, after runiing the engine to working tempature recheck tightness again and you should have a trouble free repair.
I hope this helps.

Re: Perkins 4.236M Heat Exchanger

Try this

EJ Bowman Heat Exchangers & oil coolers | EJ Bowman

and this EJ Bowman Heat Exchangers & oil coolers | EJ Bowman

They are based in Birmingham UK

Allegedly the Perkins 4.108 is apt to overheat in the Tropics where the seawater is like a warm bath and "Captain Bligh" who was a Yanmar enthusiast used to curse his. Possibly the fact that he used to sail boats as fast as they would go had something to do with it. Sadly he "changed worlds" in the Dominican Republic when his moped hit some kind of animal in the dark. Take care!
