ID:	36495I have just finished taking this engine down and thoroughly examining, checking for wear and specifications. It is like new. It was removed from a LNG Tanker lifeboat as required after so many years. It had been maintained by the ship's engineers, but I wanted to be sure it was okay.
There was no appreciable wear on cylinder liners, rings, piston, bearings, etc. I rebuilt and calibrated the injectors and sent the injector pump out for rebuild. I test ran the engine for over one hour, 60PSI oil, no leaks or overheating. I installed a large Sendure heat exchanger and rebuilt water pump">raw water pump.
It had an Paragon mechanical gear, which I have removed as they are not too reliable. I can install your Velvet Drive and bell housing or sell you one, 1-1, 1.5-1 or 2.91-1.
Price for complete engine w/o gear is $3,500 + shipping & handling. I prefer you come to Pensacola and see it run, then take it home with you. I want your rebuildable 4-107,8 core or $500.
PM for phone # and/or email and I will send photos.

Westerbeke uses several different engines. This engine is a Perkins 4-108 painted red with a Westerbeke expansion tank and the price increased $$$. Most all other parts are Perkins in the W-40. I have three Westerbekes in my shop now. All engines were built by different manufacturors.

Over the years I have worked on several Westerbekes which were built by; Perkins, Mitsibushi, Kubota + ??? Parts for Westerbekes are very expensive, so I replace internal parts with those made by the original engine builder. Valves for a Westerbeke were $26 each, from Mitsibushi they were $6, same exact valve.

Westerbeke has been around a long time and assembles a good product.
I have a buyer for this W-40/P 4.108, but no $ yet.

Re: Perkins 4-108/Westerbeke 40

Tom,
Thanks for your comments. They are really helpful.
I'm going to look at a Bristol 40 this week. I'm told the engine block is cracked. The owner is deceased and his wife has only passing knowledge of the boat. She's not sure what make the engine is. The Bristol generally came with a Westerbeke or Perkins 4-108. If it is one of these 2 engines, would it be reasonable to replace the block? If not, what would you recommend as a replacement? I'd likely want to go used, and of course I'm on a tight budget.

Which is the main reason I will not consider Westerbeke as an option if I repower.

So any idea what block Westerbeke used for the W58? I have heard Mitsubishi but have not found anyone that knows for certain.

Thanks
Skip

Hi Larry,

In order to determine if a block is "cracked" it must have been dissassembled. At this time a competent mechanic should examine all components and determine wear, specifications, replacement costs, etc.
We have another P4.108 that we have torn down and examined carefully. To rebuild this engine, parts alone will cost about $2,000, then add machine work and our labor. We have decided to part out this engine, so we have a good block, head, crankshaft, cam and other servicable parts.

WE have nine other engines awaiting our attention. Business is good.

Are you interested in 4-107 parts? I have a complete engine to part out, and would love to sell it all.

Depends? Where are you? We are in Pensacola, FL. Shipping is expensive these days. Check out prices on eBay. There are several 4.107 ads with buy it now $$. We are parting out several engines because we can make more money with less work. We are swamped with work.
Thanks for responding,
Tom

Do you have or have you ever worked on the Perkins M-50 engines, I also believe the same engine came as a Volvo MD-22.

I am in Galveston, Tx. Maybe I should try and list it as parts, but I was hoping to raise some quick cash by selling it all at once. Trying to do a haul-out before it gets too hot!
