How to test a temperature metre/gauge.

I have a 1985 Volvo Penta MD 11C - inconveniently, the temperature gauge or metre is not working. Would anybody know how to test the metre and the gauge separately? Just replacing one or the other would, as you all know, result in replacing the one that works resulting in additional costs, work etc.
