Yeah Compass - I did see that. Great result, eh?! I'm SO pleased for Diane.

Now if we can just get Jack sorted...!

By the look of the corrosion in the intake manifold I’d say it’s pretty much game over, my seized bearing theory is fading fast. The mystery now is not WHAT happened but more... HOW it happened.
Pete.

I've only skimmed this thread but yr post made me look at pics, yep skipperpete it looks like thats the smoking gun.
I hope for OP's sake a 3ym30 is just a rebadged 3TNV76 or the yammer mafia will be rubbing their fat sausage fingers together with glee.

corrosion in the intakes...reminds me of
"...stub of camshaft where the timing-belt-wheel sat crumbled, camshaft stopped - most pushrods bent. (dirty water blowing out the intake when trying to start...that was the giveaway)..."

Pete.
Thanks for pointing out the rust in the air intake. Here we have a lot of humidity and salt in the air.

What else could be the cause of the rust?

The cylinders themselves would have an oil coating. The engine ran pretty recently.

So could have rust been sucked in and jammed the rings? I doubt it.

By game over are you suggesting that cooling water got in somehow? Coolant level has not gone down and no water in the oil or oil in the water.

Suggestions?

My puller set finally arrived a few days late. Amazon is amazing. The refunded me the $35 shipping for 2 days of late delivery without me asking!

I am going to the boat to take off the valve cover again and inspect the rust. I plan to remove the rocker arm so that I can better check the valves.

Then first to remove the head or the gear cover. I am sure I will need a new gasket set. Found a full gasket and seal set for $170 but 3 weeks shipping.

Have been busy dealing with steering cable alignment and cable tension on the big boat. Its a center cockpit with the cable going over 10 blocks to get from the sprocket to the quadrant. The alignment worked with slack cables but keeping the rudder centered in reverse was impossible.

The problem blocks had no adjustment so they had to be ground off and rewelded. Seatrials soon when the weather cools.

I'll keep you all posted.

I, too, have been wondering. Enquiring minds want to know, Jack!

Seems he's been distracting himself with the question of potentially shipping his boat to the Med. Does that mean we can assume he now has a running engine...?

Well no, its another boat. But the 25% tarifs make shipping the boat to Europe expensive.

It's been a while. Been working on getting the Mayflower 48 safe for sailing. But that's another story.

Back to the seized 3YM30.
Today I looked at the problem again and decided to take the rocker off. I have attached 2 pictures, one with the rocker on and today's picture with the rocker off.

In the rocker on picture I saw cyl. 1 exhaust valve open but assumed that the rocker was holding it open.

In the rocker off picture, you can see that the valve is open without being pushed down.

So my current theory is that the last time the engine ran the valve stuck open and when I turned the engine manually I pushed the piston up against the valve.

The valve may have stuck open because of fuel diluted oil or dirt?
Anyone have any ideas?

Because I cannot turn backwards I cannot lower the piston?

Next I plan to bolt a flat plate to the crankshaft pulley to turn the motor backwards. If this works I plan to lubricate the valve guide with pb blaster/liquid wrench etc. and tap the valve top.

If that does not work, remove the spring and and try taping again and or twisting using a drill chuck.

Anyone have suggestions on freeing the stuck valve?

Am I on the right track?

Jack. It’s time to undo 12 bolts and take off the cylinder head.

Not at all… if the valve stem is bent. Seems like a distinct possibility with all the manipulations that have gone on.
