500 Hr Globe Dry Run Impellor
Two pics attached of a dry run impeller, over two years old and about 500 hours on it. I changed it cause I couldn’t stand it any longer. It is worn, but shows no evidence of the blades drying out and beginning to crack, they are as flexible as a new one, just some wear. It is out of a Yanmar 4JHE. It never runs dry, there is water always in the pump as evidenced when you go to change it almost a quart of water runs out when you remove the cover plate.
I replaced it with an after market 12 blade black rubber impeller, stock Is eight blade I think, there seems to be no difference in water flow with more blades

Figured nothing lasts that long and that it needed to go. Actually I plan on buddy boating with a couple of other boats, and don’t want to risk this impeller and I was flushing cooling system etc.
Astonished it lasted that long, it is a harder compound and there seems to be more wear on the cover plate than I expected.

That is actually something that’s always bothered me....now I know. Harder more resistant compounds do shorten the life of the pump! I’ll stuck with the 200+ hour oberdoefer originals.

I get 5 years out of my impellers, but I grease the housing whenever I have the impellers out. Standard impellers, 2-DDs, Perkins, & Onan. Recently changed impellers that were installed in 2011. Old ones become my spares.

Re: 500 Hr Globe Dry Run Impellor
I've had terrible luck with the Globe impellers. They may work fine in a new pump, but in an older one with some wear on it they won't pump, at least the ones I had. That was on an Oberdorfer and two Sherwoods on two different engines. The pumps all worked fine with the black rubber impellers whether old or worn, but would not pump at all with brand new Globe units. And that was with new cover plates on the Sherwoods.

Used Globe in both commercial applications and pleasure. It seemed at first they were great and I started having problems. First one seemed to be too soft and the other had a spun hub. Then they quit making them for the W50. The watermen seem to like them. I'm lucky to get two years out of impeller.

I change them when they break ! Keep a few spares . Only one that died was one I left in a spare pump for years. 8 years on my genny one and 3 years and about 1000hours on the motor.

Well, I try to change them JUST before they fail! I've found that the impellers in my Johnston pumps last around 1000-1200 hours, so I tend to change when approaching the magic thousand hour mark. But then there was the one that failed in about 25 hours. It had been recently purchased, but was not in a box and was a bit dusty, and I suspect it was 'old stock' (maybe very old stock!).
We have long averaged around 300 hours a year of engine usage, so that works out to be an impeller every three years for us. I wonder if the fact that we live aboard and use the engine frequently has any effect on life time? Perhaps sitting for long periods between usages leads to early failure... who knows?

500 Hr Globe Dry Run Impellor
I thought 500 hours was extreme, these things really last 1000 hours?
Anyone else use aftermarket impellers?

Re: 500 Hr Globe Dry Run Impellor
I replaced my 4JH3E’s OEM impeller a couple months ago. It had been installed over 1000 hrs and 6 years. Some cracks were starting but no blades were broken. I saw no reason to go to an aftermarket “better” impeller.

we have a closed system with anti freeze and we take the impellers out every two years. Very good shape and over 1500 hours and still going very good. Isuzu 370 hp.
