Re: Who Said Lagoons can't sail.......

L440 directly to windward in moderate conditions, 2KN velocity made good?

Assuming this is a real question... I really hate the motion in those short waves you get passed say 15knts TWS, probably better in a 45' mono. I think lagoons would do much better sailing (at about cos(55)bspd VMG) in those conditions. Now, speed directly to windward depends on the engines, either 40 or 54hp. If you're in a hurry and don't mind the slapping (or breaking the boat) the 54hps will push you at 6knts in 20kts TWS me think.

I was talking about sailing, VMG to windward, I heard about 2kn VMG was about as good as it gets with sails on this L440, I heard the FP Helia could hardly make 1kn VMG to windward under sail...Just what I have heard.

Re: Who Said Lagoons can't sail.......

Early September we did the same trip in a Valiant 40, 12 days just day sailing and going inside Fraser Island.

The Northerlies hadn’t turned up, so we did a fair bit of motoring into lumpy southeasterly seas, six to seven knot average speed.

A cat would have been nice in the anchorages and Great Sandy Strait, there is some very skinny water up there. Still, it’s an amazing place to sail.

Which anchorages did you use? Did you go outside Fraser Island?

I use this for going to windward. NB, 8 m/s is 16 knots TWS

ok I get know. Actually the best VMG for a 440 is more like 0.2 kts, so most of the time I go there swimming, it is faster.

Impressive ! ... if sustained ! are you steering or is it the AP in wind vane mode 28AWA ?

Re: Who Said Lagoons can't sail.......

I'm steering; here in Greece among the high islands, wind often suddenly shifts more than 30 dgr, and the autopilot is not fast enough for that. Even though the VMG is heavily damped, it shows between 5 and 6 knots. If I use the AP to windward in more open seas, it is set to 30 - 35 dgr depending on seas.

So thats why they all motor to the wind, you can swim faster!
maybe 2.5 with oars and legs kicking!

Seriously though, a waypoint directly, upwind tacking under sail, 10nm
took 4 hours in a 440, better than 10 hours in the FP Helia.

Re: Who Said Lagoons can't sail.......

I have frequently 2kn VMG on the Lagoon 400 on my Raymarine and B&G instruments when tacking at 6..8kn SOG in TWS of 12..16kn. So no big deal.

Re: Who Said Lagoons can't sail.......

I just bought a new Lagoon 46. I accept the trade off in performance vs accommodation. I know about performance. I sail foiling A-Cats at 25+ knots for fun. I spend zero time living on my A-cat so it's optimized for what it is. I don't want to optimize my cruising boat for something I will only be doing 20% of the time, sailing, at the expense of what I will be doing 80% of the time, being at anchor.
My brother owned a Privilege 465 w/dagger boards. He rarely used them and I thought it was like putting headers on a Winnebago.

Probably not. This is for the Lagoon 42, from Lagoon, which I doubt is as good as the 440. Anything from 8-20 knots vmg maxes at about 55 degrees. Having said that, I've never sailed either, I guess my point would be if a cruising cat can't point at 55 degrees you really can't sail to weather.

So what you are saying with this chart--from Lagoon--is that Lagoon says Lagoons cant sail...

Really? The chart is the polars, not what the boat can do.

I have been on a L42, pointing at 38 deg. Sails just fine to weather. As close to J120? No, but lots more room all over.

As I said to the OP in my previous post, enjoy it. It sails just fine and you will enjoy it greatly assuming you didn't purchase it to race against a one design

Can you please share the link ? I could not find it at cata-lagoon.com, not in the spec, not in the brochure, not in the owner"s manual.

That doesn't make sense, you point AWA. Many (most? all ?) cruising cat will do 55TWA, but their VMG could well be much better at say 60TWA.

@Django: 6.4bpsd@6.1TWS ... congrats your L380 is faster than an outremer 5X. And I am sure it was even faster 1 second before the picture was taken !
