Boat owner at boat show?

Does the owner of a new boat get some concession from the company for letting their boat be the display at the boat show?

The dealer for our boat wanted to show it. Told hm no unless access is limited and I get half his commission if it brought him a deal on another one.

To the point, if he shows it by appointment only, the amount of wear and possible damage from ‘tire kicker’ is minimal.

For my Jeanneau, the dealer wanted at a show they paid for the radar mount and radar installation. Washed the boat afterwards. Worked out great. For my catamaran being delivered the dealer offered a free slip for as long as I let them show the boat to prospective clients. Both scenarios worked great for me.

Re: Boat owner at boat show?

Only suggestion I'd have is for you not to be on the boat during the show. I was on a boat at the Miami show where someone said "this is the dumbest boat I've ever seen" to which the person on the boat with them said, "Oh, this is my boat".

Sometimes it is even the other way around...

In Jan. 2019 we went to the BOOT in Dusseldorf, Germany and visited all the +/- 40 Foot Catamarans. There was a very nice and fully equipped Open 40 owners version on display. We did not show immediate buying interest to the guy who showed us the boat. Obviously this boat did NOT have an owner, and they were still trying to sell it. The initial asking price was, i estimate, below 10% of the list price. After some talk, they dropped it to 400K Euro.

We walked around the boat and it had some not so nice decalls on the hulls. The Salesperson told us: "we can remove that at no extra costs". Adding the words: 380K!!!

Talking about "Sellers market"...

Discount policy was similar at the Moorings/Sunsail desk.

In 2018 the story was completely the opposite. No discount has been offered to us at the BOOT and it seemed to be that all Yachts on Display (40 feet Cat) were already sold and waiting list was 1 year plus.

So i guess at the moment it should be possible to have some talks with displaying Companies. Unless another Irma or Maria hits.

Best regards,

John

“Southbound” was the “display show boat” at the Toronto Int’l Boat Show. The OP bought her there & then, at a slight “boat show discount”.

Callisto was the Outbound 46 demo in the Annapolis Sailboat Show twice. No direct compensation, but the company did an outstanding job of detailing her before the show. Much cleaner and shinier than my wife and I ever achieve. We had no issues with wear and tear from the visits. Very much worth it.

That's what I understand as well. You get a detailed boat, and they are careful with it while showing.

Re: Boat owner at boat show?

If you know well in advance, I’d say it’s worth doing even without much in he way of compensation. You can be sure the detailing and finishing will be gone over in much more detail than a normal boat. You can also be sure you’ll get the boat cleaned perfectly afterwards.
