Atoll, I think you are wise leaving the mast stepped where it is. The structural changes required in order to move it forward would be huge and, as to performance, moving the Ce of the sailplan that far forward without changes to the underbody could result in significant lee helm.

Furthermore, the cutter rig has some real advantages when the going gets tough. Obviously, you will have to have your rig altered from the original in order to allow the boom to clear the new house. The question is whether you also lengthen the mast to maintain sail area. Keep in mind that the new house will raise the Cg of the boat and significantly increase windage; these will have adverse effects on transverse stability. A higher mast with a higher boom will only accentuate this by significantly raising the Ce of the sailplan - hardly ideal for transverse stability in a cat that is fairly narrow.

Again, speak to a naval architect, but I would think you would be unwise to go to mast that is much higher than originally specified. I would also question the wisdom of going to a bridgedeck galley. The arguments about location go to and fro, but in a smaller cat such as this you will get more counter/storage space in a galley down. Just as significant, in view of the fact that transverse stability will already be compromised by your design changes, is that you will be raising the heaviest part of the accomodation - the galley, equipment and stores, up by about 3 feet. This can only accentuate the problem!

towed the trailor 350 miles up from cornwall via portsmouth and oxford to pick up some pushpits and a fuel tank at an average speed of 35 mph! going up hills was 2nd gear and down to 20 mph! but we made it 12 hrs later complete with mast,sonic drive,101 boat parts,and the kitchen sink!!.

my son was able to come along and was a great help for the first 3 days,so day 1 we were able to put a floor in on the bridge deck,temporally bolted in as a base to join all the stiffening that needs to go into the hull so we can launch and sail to cornwall.

day 2 we put in all the prefabricated chainplates,stanctions and pushpits.

day 3 got the mast up using the gaff booms as sheerlegs

day 4 mast rigging all swaged up and bottle screws tightened,just need to hank on the sails!and connect up the steering and a bit of glue here and there!

a sky hook! though keeping tension on the shrouds helps stop the mast swinging to one side if the boat is not 100% level

day 5 progress,built 2 berths and lockers,the box section seems to have added a lot of stiffness to the bridge deck also.

once the port side londitudinal bulk head is in i will be able to block off the area with plastic and hopefully not have a bed and galley full of fiberglass dust once i start laminating in the aft bulkheads.

probably not going to move it till august as i have a few other yacht deliveries in between getting this one ready to move .

day 6 update
more or less got the steering system installed,just need to bolt on a couple of blocks tommorow and run the steering line.

also made up and swaged alll the guard rail 7x19 wires and installed.

blew out the back end of my jeans! split from arse to kneecap,so now down to my "tropical attire"!

one of the advantages of putting in a tempory interiour on the bridge deck is i can really get a feel for the space i have available,i quite like the fwd bunk arrangement allready,which is probably more practical for ocean crossings,than having large twin double cabins in the fwd section.

i have debated putting in the designed after bulkheads,now, which would be permernent,and support the stairs and aft cabin doors,about 1'10" fwd of the bridge deck bulkhead,but due to time constraints,i will put in tempory ones on the plane of the deck house upright bulkhead,this should tie the aft ends together and stop a lot of flexing,might even add floors in the hulls for stiffening.

more later ,will see how i get on today with the tempory bulkheads once i have run steering lines
