Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

I installed the bilge pumps in the forward lockers with diverter valves so they can also pump out the shower sump and cabin bilges.

I also fitted the automatic shower sump drain pump,a whale gulper with bilge water sensor, and manual override switch.

the holding tank and pipework for the toilet is also inplace, ready for when I next go on the slip and fit the underwater skin fittings.

then after months of abstaining from ebay,(as it costs me a fortune every time I see something worth bidding on!) I found a sig marine 120 diesel heater 3.5kw and won the bid.

this is exactly what we have been looking for,for months as it is set up to take combustion air from outside the boat and can be run with a" heat robber exchanger system" to duct heat to the shower and saloon from inside an insulated locker.

it was actually a very good deal, for a unit with very little use and all the accessories, including a header tank.......the down side is we will be living off baked beans on toast for the next month or so

I spent a winter in Scotland, and it gets really, really cold. But it sounds like your heating plans are quite good.

it rains a lot as well on the east coast

upside is the west coast is fantastic during the summer with good connections to Edinburgh if my wife needs to get back there quickly

after a few days of mulling over various configurations on how to heat the aft cabins ,bathroom and saloon, think I will go with a ducted forced air system as it will be lighter, and have less components than radiators, probably work better.and be cheaper.

at this stage of construction it will be fairly easy to build in the the passages for insulated duckting, the only down side is that it will require 5x~ 0.2 amp fans for air circulation, with I would guess a minimum of 2 fans of the 5 to operate continuously to remove heat from the heat exchanger manifold to prevent overheating in the stove compartment.

this I would also safe guard with with a thermostatic fuel cut off from inside the heat exchanger manifold, commonly found on hydronic systems in case of power to the fans cutting off or overheat situations.

Hi Atoll,

Pardon my ignorance, but whats the advantage of drawing the combustion air from outside the boat instead of using cabin air?

Is it to avoid sucking cold air into the cabin from outside as the pressure drops (i.e. to improve heating efficiency)?

Or is it more a safety thing?

correct, drawing combustion air from the outside increases heat efficiency as the boat being well insulated and reasonably air tight contains the" radiant heat" created by the stove.

with this system the "radiant heat" created as the flue and casing heat up,is released into the accommodation and contained by the boats insulation and not sucked up the chimney .

also as the combustion air is taken from the outside and combustion gasses released outside they are at the same pressure gradient, so less chance of back drafts during windy weather, which can be a problem on yachts with short chimneys/flues .

there is also the safety aspect of co2 build up and oxygen depletion which can happen with traditional interiour vented heating appliances but far less likely with modern split units that are aspirating and venting outside.

it is also advisable regardless of weather a vessel has heating or not to fit a CO2/inert gas and smoke alarm as by the nature of any boat, inert gas can be contained in the hull and lead to asphyxiation through lack of ventilation, leaks etc

good question
, I hope this answers your question,to some extent,i worked as a qualified domestic gas heating engineer/installer many moons ago,so have some knowledge on the subject, though boats have quite a few variables compared to static instalations
