A lot of monohulls have clears (plus canvas) protecting their helm position. Mad eh?

Oh yeah, sure, I've noticed. Like Hallberg-Rassy, Amel, Oyster, ...oh wait. Sorry, those well recognised bluewater monos seem to have toughened glass....

So you're saying no bluewater boat has ever had a canvas and clears dodger? Or that no boat thus equipped has ever been bluewater capable?

While you were "noticing" did you not happen to notice for instance, that a great many of the non-stop solo circumnavigators in boats like S and S es had soft dodgers? Or are they not true "bluewater boats" according to you?

Maybe thats because they have to prepare for the massive loads of this bluewater (now turned green) crashing over their decks everytime it blows at gale force.

As soon as a cat faces frequent green water over the deck we are talking about survival conditions, where clears vs glass is about as significant as galley up vs galley down.

For our cat, green water over the deck and/or cabin is not necessarily survival conditions, not even close. Just wet and sometimes uncomfortable. However our soft bimini after 14 years is starting to give up (and we’ll replace it with a hard top) and certainly our 14 year old side curtains can’t take much more than 20 knots before ripping zippers and/or fabric, sigh.

Completely agree, fxykty. Breaking 6 to 8 meters seas should NOT be survival conditions for a seaworthy bluewater cruiser, IMO. As you said, uncomfortable maybe, but not threatening the survival of the yacht and her crew.
But it CAN be survival in a boat that has serious vulnerabilities in very rough conditions.

I have often wondered why manufacturers do not either design & put hardtop protection on their boats in the first place, or make provision for it so owners don't have to come up with an after market tangle of stainless tubing.

So you've had a soft Bimini and presumably clears for 14 years? According to Mr Beaky, you're mad. Although he won't tell you that himself.....

The boat is 14 years old and I haven’t seen any invoices for bimini or clears (not very clear anymore) so I’ve made the assumption that it’s all 14 years old.

Well actually if the clears being wiped out allows lots of water to enter the boat, then I would tell him that myself, without hesitation. If it doesn't risk flooding the boat, knock yourself out, put cling wrap up if you want.

6-8m is the fully developed seastate for F8

thats not survival conditions and also does not give amounts of green water over the decks.

Rabbi,

It certainly does when its wind against current for 3 days. As in full southerly against EAC between Lord Howe Island and the Oz coast!

OK. I only know about the EAC from Pixar's "Find Nemo".
