Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie

Doesn't look good for this yacht unfortunately. Squally SE'ly conditions . No other details I'm sorry. Emergency services were contacted and I think a couple of yachts that were part of a Friday afternoon race gave assistance.

Bugger, that happened on home waters here on the Lake. I don't recognize the Cat. I have checked our local weather Observations points and highest gust on the coast was recorded at 37 knots with winds averaging 25 to 30 knots just offshore. A gale warning was and is in force for today through Saturday. I don't know of any local sail club that would be out racing with a gale warning issued. I hope everyone is OK.

Yeah, we have a Spirited 380 on the lake and that certainly looks like it. Was built at Tingira Heights then Swansea IIRC.

Where is the pic located - near the sand islands? Belmont Bay, maybe off Pulbah near the safe water mark? These are the only spots shallow enough I would suggest.

Hush. Lake Macquarie is one of Australia's many stunning beauty spots. Normally we are hell bent on not encouraging to many visitors to this glorious bit of the Aussie dream. However, with the virus and the fires maybe we should encourage more visitors.
Just to demonstrate how magical the Lake is you will notice that the cat did not completely invert. Now just how smart are we eh? Come on down.

we are on lake mac and heard this on radio this morning. marine rescue guy quoted as "14m" and "5 people rescued all safe" and "in area just north of pulbah island"

my first though was a day sailing sports cat...but pic shows cabin

weather here has been foul last few days...rain and strong easterlies...but nothing ridiculous. plus on the lake there is no sea / swell

i am speachless how such can happen. i swear if i TRIED to flip our boat in that situation i would not be able to do it.

my guess: upwind leg, full sails, daggerboard full down, 25 kn gust and inexperienced driver too slow to depower - did the trick.

but a cat like that should never flip in flat water just due to wind pressure. should be impossible...the force needed should be more than sails / rig can bear

i wondering if these spirited 380s have a design issue to maybe nose dive..bury the leeward hull ?

I have seen a 40 foot Wharram capsized due to wind pressure in Wellington Harbour so anything’s possible.

Light boat, big rig. No rig should be able to fail before lifting a hull. Take a look at the size of your shrouds, compare their breaking strain to your boat's displacement.

Spirited 380's have a pretty tall rig on them. It's a 38' boat, with similar design displacement to our 44'er, and a mast about 2m metres taller.

Good for light winds, but you need to be conscious of the reefing requirements.
