Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie
So, what kind of reefing guidelines would one follow to keep a Spirited 380 within acceptable limits?

easy: if one hull out of water then reef.
I have noticed though that in Australia using full sails in 30 kn+ true is acceptable way to sail. Sometimes even with code 0 or spi. So it is a bit cultural thing. Works fine most of the time.
Reminds me of this year experiences sailing east coast. We were sailing in rough conditions, i was double reefed and the other cat had full sail with code 0.

Example guidelines for a Lagoon which has far less chance of lifting a hull
Apparent Wind speed: Calm sea (reduce by 10% in rough water)
20 - 26 kn 1 reef in main
26 - 30 kn 1 reef in main 75% genoa
30 - 36 kn 2 reef in main 60% genoa
So if wind on the lake was gusting to 32kn as True wind, the apparent would have been quite high on this boat - should have had at least 2 reefs in main, or maybe 3 on this boat.

a. The rigging needs a 5:1 safety factor to last long. Add a factor so that it would fail reliably, and the rig would be so flimsy it would probably fatigue motoring in chop.
b. Someday you will need full power to drive off a lee shore.
Thus, the rig should be able to fly a hull with a 5:1 safety factor. Keeping both hulls in the water is seamanship. If you don't understand how to handle a multihull pressed hard in gusty conditions you probably shouldn't sail one. Seriously, they aren't for everyone, yet more and more, everyone wants to buy a fast cruising cat.
They often under size the rig on charter boats, to protect the boat from credit card captains.

we are all entitled to our opinions
mine is that there is no way my cat (12m long / 6.4m beam / 7.5mt) would lift a hull due to wind alone. no. way.
upon reflection i'd agree the rig might not go (although i wouldn't bet on it)...but the sails definitely would
if anybody cares to cover the cost, i'm willing to do a haul down test n see...
of course the spirited is a different animal, but the two recent capsizes does raise in my mind the question whether they have a problem burying the lee bow on a big bear-away
incidentally, can't see the boat listed for sale anywhere (not that everyone advertises). bet they are glad they got it vertical yesterday...blew dogs off here last night & this morning...nobbies & norah head both saw close to 50kts
cheers

Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie
Surely you must be mistaken. A catamaran would never capsize and not right itself. The next thing you may suggest is that in deep water, a catamaran might turn completely over and not right itself. I would never suggest such a thing!

Jim your right Anything goes in Wellington Harbour. I have seen Peter Blake sailing ENZA (92 foot cat) with one hull out of the water in Wellington Harbour!

Happy everyone is safe and sound!
It's maybe too soon for the tacky opportunistic post, but if anyone sees this boat for sale with a big discount, please let me know. I'm happy to rebuild this dunked (not sunk!) boat

Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie
I've traveled a few thousand miles on a Spirited 380. Great cruising cat. Leeward hull is very buoyant, never looked like burying in a blow offshore. The 380's need to be reefed early. Around 17knts true, in the gusts, is time for me to have a 1st reef in. By then windward centreboard needs to be fully raised. 380's do have plenty of sail area, great for light airs. Reef early.

Correction: I meant leeward centreboard needs to be raised.

Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie
I was going to say Wahine Stum. IslandHopper she was a 488 ft ferry that sank at the Harbour entrance and drowned 58 people.
IslandHopper I am not sure you are allowed to mix two languages like that unless you are on Bondi beach!

That's because we grow up aspiring to sail on one of these!
