Why Delete the Square-Top Mainsail?

Looking to purchase our 2nd cat, specifically another Manta 42. Wondering why those that claim new or newer sails have not replaced the factory originals with another square top main?


Is the cost that much more? Is it that you must remove / reinstall the top batten before use (at least that was the case on our previous boat where we had a sail bag)?



I'm sure that others have ditched the square top on other brand boats also - but why? Seems to me the added performance would be worth the cost & slight inconvenience.....

There are rigging workarounds to removing the top batten. Also Doyle makes the Anomaly Headboard which really does the trick but you do have to buy their sail.
