Reports in the French media that apparently this cat:


TRANSAT 2012 de LOVE LOVE

Has capsized off Morocco in bad weather. Four possibly five dead. Other details escape my schoolboy French.

The reports mention 20 Km/h winds (about 10 knots) - if my french is any good. If so hardly bad weather. Suspect we will have to wait for more information.

This is tragic. I wonder what the conditions were really like... the vendee globe boats are near there, and aren't seeing much wind. The GRIB I just looked at doesn't show much wind either.

The first story link has a picture of a pretty large power boat associated with the story... weird.

Hell - at this stage not even sure it was a cat. The only photos show a very large power boat.

This is so very sad, these are friends of ours and we know the skipper and the boat very well and we were with them only a few days ago sharing a large Tuna that they caught.

Yes, the boat was a sailing catamaran, FP Belize 43, and we know some of the details of what happened, but we are waiting for more information. We can confirm that she never capsized but went onto the rocks, the weather was very bad at the time and this obviously paid a large part in this tragedy.

I did a Google news search and found one other board talking of this.

The report there was that it was indeed a Belize 43 but also that the winds were only 20k/hr. That's under 12 knots.

If true something fishy.

I was checking out of the Moroccan West coast on 15th and the port police captain showed me pictures of the Belize.
There was a full police report in French which I could not understand, but the pictures showed that it was indeed capsized,
Also, I do not recall seeing any damage to the keels or rudders, but I was in a bit of shock and not looking for damage, so I might have missed it.

I think that it ended upside down and possibly tripped up on the ground in shallows. Lots of rope and fishing nets around the props. I can not belive that a cat like that would go over "capsize" in deep water. It only had a genoa by all accounts the boom had broken in Alicante, so hardly had to much sail up. They were heading for Gibralar to get it repaired. It is a sad mystery!
