No on the HC and No on the Wetsnail. Get something without all the wood to work on.

Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

From reading op post I would say go for something else. YOU have to be prepared to work on the boat, note the YOU. Not paying someone else. I have just done a 5000 mile solo trip on my HC41 with no breakages or failures, but then i do all the maintenance myself and I think that is very important on any boat, not just an older model. Nothing happens quickly on a HC but I like it that way! Be prepared to roll your sleeves up if you buy one. Each to their own.

The build quality is ok, but for me all that teak and wasted space by being a double ender is not my thing.
Cheers
My thinking to, boats are love afairs not rational decissions

Re: Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

If it's the TYPE of boat you want than sure, consider it.
+The deck core is built with 3" squares of core. Each square is isolated so water doesnt creep far.
-The maintenance is very high as you suspect.
+They are built very very solid.
-with the overhangs, pulpit, 'sprit, pushpit etc you are paying for 40 ft moorage.
?Check the tanks very carefully. On the 38 they are completely buried, glassed over SS and not very removeable without destroying the beautiful interior.
-Personally I hated my Pullman berth. Would never have one again. Harder to get out of than a V berth. Very hot, poor circulation.
+I did like the V head though.
-Going into a 3-4 ft chop is like not moving at all. You're going to be tacking through 120 degrees! Even motor sailing is difficult into that!

I don' believe at all that buying a boat should be emotional and non practical. It doesn't have to be. Make sure you REALLY want to look beautiful, at the cost of constant maintenance! There are other similar boats with less teak. Tashiba etc. or even Passport 37?

Re: Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

An asym or drifter work fine to drive a Hans in light air. A dousing sock is the trick for that. I'll try out my top/down furlers in the next month and see what kind of difference they make.
Switch to LFP batteries and you can put them almost anywhere.
Oil the teack or let it go natural and don't varnish the exterior.
Lovely boats, lovely easy motion, they move just fine with the right sails (and crew).
One complaint - no steering in reverse, only prop walk, and my engine being under the companionway is a bit ch to work on. Don't know where a 33s engine is.
My friend's 42 has the engine underneath the galley island. A breeze to work on. They let the exterior teak go natural - looks good.
I like watching boats around me bouncing, weaving, rolling, pitching while I drink my coffee.
Different strokes for different folks.
I wouldn't be caught dead sailing a high freeboard, glorified refrigerator box with a formica interior.
But that's just me.

If I was you I would not. I have friends, an Alaskan couple, who were very happy with theirs. The work is something you have to keep on top of.

Re: Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

I like the looks of a HC33. But there appears to be LOT of wood work involved in owning one.
Here is one I've followed.

Re: Would You Buy a Hans Christian 33?

I know the OP only asked "Would you buy a Hans Christian 33?" thus a yes or no answer but for the posters who posted simply "no" it would be nice to know why.

+1 from a Baba 40 owner! Secret is decide what you want to finish and what you want to let grey. (Find one without teak decks)

They're beautiful boats, but do require maintenance.

Make sure it's in good shape.

Hah! Actually the 34 and 36 were totally different boats than the later HC's. Different yard and far higher quality in the later ones....
